The fire initially started on Sunday, during live fire training and was thought to be controlled and extinguished, before it re- ignited on Monday morning. Fire and Emergency NZ was called to the fire with crews from Waiouru, Turangi, and Southern Lakes were among those attending. The total Fire Fighting force included Thirteen NZDF personnel, nine FENZ firefighter teams and supported by five contracted Helicopters all working on the blaze. Today ( Thursday the 29th) The Department of Conservation crews have joined fire and emergency volunteers, Na defence force personnel, heavy Machinery operators and aerial firefighting teams to suppress remaining areas of heat and containment lines . It was interesting to Note that the smoke was so dense, Health Warnings were issued in Napier and Hastings not to breath the clouds in, that’s 150 kilometres away as the crow flies..
