Should all non-native motorists be forced to pass an Irish driving exam before hitting our roads?
While drivers from EU and recognised exchange countries can swap their licences directly, those from non-recognised states must go through the full testing process. But with traffic and safety concerns on the rise, should the rules change for everyone moving to Ireland?

𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐫 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐭 𝐫𝐮𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐲 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐲, 𝟏 𝐍𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫.

From today, 1 November 2026, learners applying for a third or fourth permit must have taken a driving test within the previous two years.

A test booking, cancellation, missed test or place on a waiting list does not meet this requirement.

Learners reaching the end of their fourth or subsequent permit may also need to restart the learning-to-drive process.

Feeling tired behind the wheel this bank holiday? Take a break!

The RSA and Applegreen have teamed up to offer free coffee to motorists from 2pm to 8pm on Friday 23 and Monday 26 October, helping drivers stay alert and tackle driver fatigue.

Driving when tired can impair your concentration, reaction time and ability to drive safely. If you’re feeling tired, don’t push through it. Pull over somewhere safe and take a break.

☕ Here’s a tip: Have a caffeinated drink and take a 15 minute nap to help you feel more alert before continuing your journey. by then the caffeine will have kicked in.

😴 Remember, caffeine is only a temporary aid. If you’re chronically fatigued or very tired, sleep is the only real solution.

Plan ahead, take regular breaks and make sure you’re fit to drive. Arriving safely is always worth the extra time.

In any language, we all know what a red light means. Unfortunately 10 motorists in Kilkenny detected breaking lights in Kilkenny in a period over 24 hours got a refresher. Breaking red lights endangers you and other road users.
One driver intercepted earlier in Irishtown was also a disqualified driver and now faces a court appearance as well as the mandatory 80 Euro fine and 3 Penalty Points.
