Five checks before you pull off the drive. They come straight from the government's own towing safety list.

Coupling locked on at the right height. Breakaway cable clipped on with enough slack that it won't pull the brakes on by itself. Plug undamaged and every light working. Tyres with no cuts or bulges, set to the right pressure for the load, with at least 1.6mm of tread. Wheel nuts done up to the right torque.

Then the load. Not overloaded, spread evenly and secured. If it's an unbraked trailer, it can't go over 750kg and it shouldn't weigh more than half of what your car does.

Scissor lift, van mount or truck mount? Here's the cheat sheet, so you know what you're asking for before you pick up the phone.

Scissor lifts go straight up. Ours reaches a 10.1m working height and it's only 0.81m wide, so it'll fit through a standard doorway for indoor jobs like fit-outs and warehouse work.

Van mounts are for reaching out at the roadside. Ours go to 13.5m and 13.8m working height with up to 8.4m of outreach, all on a 3.5 tonne van.

Truck mounts are for proper height. Ours does 21m with up to 10m of outreach and a 300kg safe working load. You can drive it on a car licence too.

Your trailer starts snaking at 55mph. Your gut says stamp on the brake. Don't.

The Highway Code is clear on this one. Ease off the accelerator and let your speed come down gently. The government's own towing guidance adds that harsh braking on a bend makes the trailer more unstable, which is the last thing you want when it's already moving about.

Most of the time it comes down to two things. Going too fast or a badly loaded trailer. Keep the heavy stuff mainly over the axle, make sure there's a downward load on the tow ball and stay inside the manufacturer's limits.

Save this one. You want it in your head before you ever need it.

21 metres of working height, on a chassis you can drive with a standard car licence.

That's our CTE ZED 21 JHV truck mount. It's built on a 3.5 tonne chassis, reaches up to 10m out sideways and takes a 300kg safe working load. So you can drive it to the job yourself without a lorry licence.

If you're trained to operate it, take it self-drive. If not, hire it with one of our fully qualified MEWP operators.

Need less reach? We've got 13.5m and 13.8m van mounts too, all out of our yard in Wigan.
