GUESS THE FAULT EP.21 — THE REVEAL 🚨

You waited long enough. 😂
Now we finally have the answer.

Remember that horrible knock from the 2016 Mercedes GLC?

The comments went crazy:

💉 Injectors
⛓️ Timing chain
🔧 Rockers / lifters
⚙️ Crank pulley

…and plenty more.

But some of you called it from the beginning. 🎯

We stripped the engine down and found:

💥 ALL BIG-END BEARINGS SPUN
💥 EXCESSIVE PLAY ON CYLINDER 2
💥 CRANKSHAFT BADLY DAMAGED AND CRACKED

🔨 FINAL DIAGNOSIS: CATASTROPHIC BOTTOM-END FAILURE.

That was the knock you were hearing.

And massive respect to everyone who commented BIG END / CONROD BEARING / BOTTOM END before we opened it. 👏🏆

Some of you absolutely nailed this one from the sound alone.

This is why we waited for the strip-down before giving the answer.

🔥 YOUR OM651 IS TRYING TO BREATHE THROUGH THIS?! 😳

This is what we found inside a Mercedes OM651 inlet manifold.

That’s not a little bit of dirt.
That’s years of carbon, soot and oil buildup restricting the airflow into the engine. 🤯

And look at the throttle body… it’s absolutely covered too.

When the intake system gets this bad, your Mercedes may start showing the signs:

❌ Loss of power
❌ Poor acceleration
❌ Increased fuel consumption
❌ Limp mode
❌ EGR-related faults
❌ Excessive smoke
❌ DPF problems
❌ Poor engine performance

The problem is that many owners keep driving because the van still starts and runs.

But an engine needs AIR.

If the inlet is heavily restricted, cleaning only the DPF or replacing sensors isn’t necessarily going to solve the real problem.

🔧 At VAN AUTO LTD, when we diagnose Mercedes diesel problems, we look at the whole system — intake, EGR, DPF, turbo and related components — rather than just throwing parts at the fault codes.

This OM651 definitely needed attention. 😬

🚨 GUESS THE FAULT — EP.22 REVEAL 🚨

THE ANSWER? THE FAULT WAS ALREADY FIXED. 😳😂

That huge cloud of smoke had everyone guessing:

💨 Head gasket?
💨 Diesel runaway?
💨 Injectors?
💨 AdBlue?
💨 Blown turbo?

Here’s what was actually happening… 👇

🔧 The turbo had already been replaced.
🔧 The entire intake / air system was cleaned to remove the oil left behind from the failed turbo.
🔧 The DPF was removed and deep cleaned.
🔧 The exhaust/emissions system still contained residual oil, water and moisture from the failure and cleaning process.

🔥 What you’re watching is the post-repair regeneration/test, bringing the exhaust system up to temperature and burning/drying everything left behind.

So the massive smoke cloud wasn’t the engine destroying itself…

IT WAS THE CLEAN-UP AFTER THE REPAIR. 😂💨

And yes — some of you got VERY close. 👀👏

This is exactly why diagnosing a vehicle from smoke colour alone can send you completely the wrong way.

🚨 REMEMBER THE DESTROYED TURBO? THIS IS WHAT WE FOUND NEXT… 😳

This Mercedes Sprinter 907 arrived at VAN AUTO on recovery with a completely destroyed turbo. 💀

The compressor wheel was destroyed — but replacing the turbo was only the beginning.

We said from the start:

❌ DON’T JUST FIT ANOTHER TURBO.
🔍 CHECK THE WHOLE SYSTEM.

And this is exactly why.

We removed the intercooler…

🛢️ FULL OF OIL.

Then we checked the exhaust side…

🛢️ THE CATALYST WAS FULL OF OIL TOO. 😳

The failed turbo had contaminated BOTH SIDES of the system.

Imagine simply bolting on another turbo and starting the engine without checking any of this. 💀

After a catastrophic turbo failure, you need to inspect:

🔧 Intercooler
🔧 Boost pipes
🔧 Intake system
🔧 Turbo oil feed & return
🔧 Catalyst / DPF / exhaust system
🔧 Oil and debris throughout the system

ONE FAILED TURBO CAN LEAVE A LOT MORE DAMAGE BEHIND.

🔥 DON’T JUST REPLACE THE FAILED PART.
FIND THE CAUSE. CHECK THE DAMAGE. FIX IT RIGHT.
