With a time of 7:25.8 minutes, the BMW M235i-based ACL2 was the fastest road-legal BMW on the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 2016. Its standard engine was replaced with a unit from the BMW M4, upgraded to 411 kW/570 hp, the top speed limit was removed via software, and a rear-axle limited-slip differential with a locking range of 25 to 95 per cent was fitted. Thanks to this power output and the weight reduction achieved, the ACL2 boasted a power-to-weight ratio of just 2.59 kg per hp, which overshadowed even a Ferrari 458 Italia or the Porsche 911 GT3 RS. Of course, the lightweight construction and aerodynamic conversion – designed to maximise downforce – involved extensive modifications: lightweight forged wheels, a carbon-fibre bonnet, carbon-fibre aerodynamic components, the removal of the rear seats and the replacement of the front seats with carbon-fibre racing bucket seats are just some of the measures carried out. Pure sports car with a powerful diesel under the bonnet? Who'd make such a thing? AC Schnitzer did just that in 2015. The centrepiece of the conversion was the engine: the M50d unit, which BMW used in the 5 series (F10/F11), for example, was tuned for more power and fitted into the ACZ4 5.0d. This delivered 316 kW/430 PS and a maximum torque of 840 Nm. The rear-axle differential and limited-slip differential from the BMW M3 (E92) replaced the standard rear axle, and the standard manual gearbox was also swapped for an 8-speed automatic. Fitted out in this way, the AC Schnitzer ACZ4 5.0d sprinted from 0 to 100 km/h in an incredible 4.5 seconds, reached its top speed only beyond the 300 km/h mark and, with a time of 1:37.22 min according to a test by ‘Auto Bild sportscars’, was the fastest diesel at the Sachsenring. In 2012, too, the fastest MINI came from Aachen: the AC Schnitzer RAPTOR, based on the MINI Coupé JCW. The RAPTOR completed a lap of the Hockenheimring in just 1:10.87 minutes, beating the EAGLE’s record by 1.11 seconds. Absolutely astonishing! For the 99d, unveiled in 2011, we boosted the engine – originally from the 320d Efficient Dynamics, then the most efficient BMW model – to 140 kW/190 hp and 420 Nm, whilst simultaneously reducing CO₂ emissions from 109 to 99 grams and fitting the engine into the Z4 Coupé. The Coupé was weight-optimised and its dynamic handling improved: thanks to an AC Schnitzer racing suspension, lightweight forged alloy wheels weighing just 7.9 kg, lightweight brake discs and other measures, we reduced the unsprung mass directly at the wheels by 35 kg. The first concept car based on a MINI was the AC Schnitzer EAGLE in 2011. After optimising all aspects of the JCW in terms of ‘Efficient Performance’: power had been increased to 191 kW/260 HP, the weight reduced by 80 kg, the exhaust system upgraded, our coilover suspension fitted and the EAGLE fitted with 18-inch Mi2 wheels, it catapulted itself straight into the sports car class with a lap time of 1:12.3 minutes at Hockenheim. Driving pleasure? Always! And alternative drive systems are welcome too: the AC Schnitzer GP3.10 GAS POWERED was our high-performance LPG-powered Coupé back in 2007. Performance and efficiency, economy and environmental friendliness came together here in an exciting concept car. The extravagant wide-body kit for the 3 series Coupé would have been a real showstopper on its own – but we also tuned the V10 engine from the current M5/M6 and fitted it to the GP3.10. As a result, the GP3.10 delivered 406 kW/552 HP on either LPG or petrol. Switchable. It was fast too: 318.1 km/h – a world record! The fastest LPG-powered vehicle. Of course, the AC Schnitzer racing suspension, 20-inch wheels and a visually stunning interior in beige, brown and light green were essential features.
