“It’s the employee’s car, so it’s not the company’s responsibility.”

False. If an employee uses their own car for business journeys, your business still has a duty to manage the risks.

These vehicles are known as your ‘grey fleet’. Whether someone is visiting a customer or travelling between sites, your driving for work arrangements should cover the driver, the vehicle and the journey.

That means checking the vehicle is safe, maintained and appropriately insured, and allowing realistic journey times that account for breaks and fatigue.

The usual commute to a regular workplace is generally excluded.

ULTS Training last weekend for Gardiner and Scardifield.

This course is a AITT registered course backed by 7 hours CPC if required.

Wayne(below) has vast experience of various machines which was very useful for this course as his experience shone through when he came to using a lorry crane with a brick grab.

He handled the crane with care and a good understanding.

A productive outcome for Gardiner and Scardifield in Worthing.

𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝘃𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗨 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸? 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂’𝗿𝗲 𝘂𝗽 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝘂𝗹𝗲𝘀.

Since 1 July 2026, vans and vehicle-and-trailer combinations over 2.5 tonnes used to carry goods between the UK and EU may need:

• A second-generation smart tachograph
• A valid driver tachograph card
• Compliance with drivers’ hours, breaks, rest periods and record-keeping requirements

These rules can also cover businesses carrying their own goods where driving is the driver’s main activity. For vehicles over 2.5 tonnes and up to 3.5 tonnes, an exemption applies to own-account transport where driving is not the main activity.

Operator licensing needs a separate check. Vans over 2.5 tonnes and up to 3.5 tonnes carrying goods for hire or reward into the EU require a standard international operator licence. Heavier vehicles fall under the wider goods vehicle licensing rules.

Before travelling, check your vehicle’s permitted weight, including any trailer, and the type of work you’re carrying out.
