Another Week, Another Timing Chain 🔧

This week, we’re tackling a full timing chain kit replacement on a MINI Countryman, which requires the removal of the engine, gearbox, and front bumper.

Not all engines are built the same - some use a timing belt, while others use a timing chain to keep the engine’s internal components working in sync.

⛓️ Timing chains are designed to last a long time, but they’re not maintenance-free. They can stretch, wear or develop issues over time, and ignoring the warning signs can lead to costly engine damage.

🔩 Timing belts are made from reinforced rubber and have manufacturer-recommended replacement intervals that are important to stick to.

As BMW specialists, we know how important it is to keep on top of your engine maintenance. If your BMW or MINI is rattling on startup, running rough or showing signs of timing chain trouble, don't leave it until it's too late!

A touch of British luxury at RDrive ✨

This stunning Daimler Super Eight has been with us this week for some engine work and general maintenance.

One of this week’s jobs involved some major work on a Range Rover Sport SDV6 🔧

The vehicle was presented with knocking and grinding noises while driving, accompanied by an intermittent suspension warning on the instrument cluster.

Following a full diagnostic assessment, we identified a significant fault within the vehicle’s Active Roll Control (ARC) system. Inspection revealed that the hydraulic pipes supplying the ARC system had suffered from advanced corrosion, resulting in hydraulic fluid loss and a subsequent drop in system pressure.

The ARC system relies on hydraulic pressure to operate the active anti-roll bars and control body movement during cornering and uneven road conditions. As the hydraulic fluid level and pressure deteriorated, the ARC units were no longer able to operate correctly. This ultimately resulted in the internal rubber components within the ARC bars becoming dry and seized, contributing to the abnormal knocking and grinding noises reported by the customer.

This was a substantial repair requiring the replacement of the affected ARC bars, pipework, and associated components, followed by system bleeding, pressure checks and diagnostic calibration to ensure the active suspension system was operating correctly.

If you've noticed any abnormal noises when driving, it's always worth getting them checked out.

Another Jaguar F-Type V6 in the workshop, this time for a supercharger replacement. 💨🔥

The supercharger forces more air into the engine than it could draw in naturally - more air allows the engine to burn more fuel, producing significantly more power and torque. It’s a key part of what gives the V6 its instant throttle response and exhilarating performance.

When the supercharger develops a fault, you can experience loss of power, unusual noises, poor performance or warning lights, so getting it diagnosed and repaired correctly is essential.

One of this week’s jobs at RDrive 💡

This Land Rover Defender came in with an inoperative nearside headlamp, so we stripped the front end back, replaced the unit and put everything back together.

These mid-repair photos show just how much has to come apart to access the headlamp properly - not always as straightforward as it looks!

Another job completed and this Defender 110 is now ready to get back on the road.
