🚗💷 Let’s Clear This Up: Nobody Pays “Road Tax” 🚲🚶♀️
It’s a phrase we still hear far too often — but in the UK, nobody pays road tax.
What drivers pay is Vehicle Excise Duty (VED), and it does not fund roads.
Here’s how it actually works:
🔹 Roads are paid for through general taxation
That includes Income Tax, Council Tax, VAT and other general taxes — paid by everyone, including:
• Drivers
• Cyclists
• Pedestrians
• Public transport users
• People who don’t own a vehicle at all
🔹 Vehicle Excise Duty is not ring-fenced
VED goes into the Treasury’s general budget. It is not a fee for road use and does not give drivers ownership or priority on the road.
🔹 The Highway Code is clear: roads are shared
Under the Highway Code and the Hierarchy of Road Users, drivers have a greater responsibility to protect those who are more vulnerable — such as pedestrians and cyclists — regardless of how they travel or what they pay.
⚠️ Saying “I pay road tax” does not justify:
• Close passing cyclists
• Blocking crossings or pavements
• Aggressive or impatient driving
• Ignoring give-way rules
Everyone has an equal right to use the public highway — and everyone benefits when the rules are followed properly.
Respect isn’t bought with a tax disc.
Safety isn’t optional.
The Highway Code applies to us all.
Let’s move on from the myth — and focus on sharing the road responsibly, so everyone gets home safely.
