Fished Stripes ‘n’ Kayaks this weekend at Bewl. This was the second part of the ‘2 Big Perch Competition’ sponsored by Angling LIVE and River7 Adventures.

I was going into the event with a small lead and my focus was to try and win the prize of 2 night’s accommodation and boat hire in Holland for me + guest.

Of course, I would like to have one the days tournament as well, but after an hour I didn’t think this would be possible, but I was going to give it a go.

Bigger baits on an Eagle Claw 1/0 Dropshot hook would help to keep the undersize fish off the bait and it kind of worked. I didn’t travel far which was part 1 of the plan. One mark was now buoyed off, the second mark was devoid of fish. So I fished two other areas near the launch, the other mark was way down the lake and seeing as I was catching OK, I decided to leave it, glad I did as two anglers visited the area and said it was full of bream, no sign of perch.

After filling my card I started to slowly upgrade, 1cm at a time. Then the sizes got a little bigger. Didn’t manage to fill my card with 30cm+ fish, one pesky 29cm holding me back.

The fish kept coming all day. I tried to crank for them, but trout were straight on the lure, so didn’t bother with that. Had a few nibbles on a Keitech, but no real commitment so stuck with the dropshot, fishing it on the bottom and as the day progressed higher in the water, allowing it to drop through schools of perch. Only needed three changes of dropshot lure through the day, they would shut down on a colour then a swap out soon got the bites going again.

I finished in 14th, had hoped for a top 10.

As for the ‘2 Big Perch Competition’ my 35cm on the day combined with the 41cm from the previous tournament had done enough for me to take the win. Happy days.

Congratulations to Alexander Apostoiu on taking the win (his second kayak tournament in the UK), the ever-consistent Richard Archer 2nd and Tiberiu Nica 3rd.

Big thanks to Bogdan Pascaru for organising the event and to the sponsors for the prizes.

Next stop The Pitsford Kayak Grand Slam, no electronics, supplied lures only.

A few Smallmouth Bass from the practice days at the Hobie Fishing Worlds 10/11, caught on a mixture of Keitech and Megabass swimbaits.

Tournament days I started on dropshot with a 1/0 Trokar Finesse Worm hook and Roboworms, then swimbaits for Day 1.

Day 2 a couple of fish on Keitechs then 18 bass and 2 drum on Crush City Neds on Eagle Claw Laser Sharp 3/16 Finesse Jig Heads (Ned).

Day 3 was all on Neds with a mixture of Crush City and Z Man lures.

Those Eagle Claw Fishing hooks stuck fast, only losing 3 jumpers during the tournament, trying to keep fish down until netted was not easy, Smallmouth love to fly!

Zandermania 2024 is complete. Once again, I stuck to the plan and ignored everyone else, well for day 1 anyway.

The full card was 6x Zander over 2 days, it wasn’t expected to be easy.

The wind howled but I found shelter on day 1, and found fish, but making them bite wasn’t so easy. I had my first fish quite early on and a second soon after then it got hard. I was in 1st place, but by lunchtime that had changed and was followed by a phone call from Mark Radcliffe to let me know he had overtaken me!

Time for a 10min power nap. It didn’t help and day 1 was over, I was in 4th place.

Day 2 the wind hit as soon as the first kayak hit the water, although not as strong as on Day 1, there was no shelter. I headed to the same area as Day 1. I really struggled to control my Hobie ProAngler 360 once I had cast to a fish, not knowing how the fish was reacting. There were some large shoals of Bream about and a ton of bait fish, the Zander really weren’t interested. The pike were!

With 3 hours to go I got a call to say there were loads of fish showing in another area… I headed downwind. When I arrived, they had gone. Decided to head towards the launch and see what was about on the way. Near the launch I finally spotted a fish, cast, lost it as the wind spun me. Then I had a thump, thought it was a big perch. The reel started to sing as the rod bent over. So pleased to see a fat zander. That was the final fish for me. Only 3 on the card, but good enough to share 4th place with my Hobie Fishing Teammate Phil Nichol.

I don’t think by body has been wrecked as much over 2 days fishing. Grafham was cruel.

Big thank you to Reuben Heaton/Eagle Claw for sponsoring my entry to Zandermania. I caught fish!

Thank you to Gary and Sam for running a tight ship, Zandermania was superbly run. Thanks to the sponsors for all the prizes.

Flambeau for the tackle boxes for all anglers. And Grafham Water for allowing us to use their venue.

KAOTY Christchurch this coming weekend and then flying off to Canada for the Hobie Fishing Worlds the weekend after. It’s a busy month!

A recent trip to the Lake District with the plan for targeting Arctic Char as I had never caught one before but always wanted to, day one mission accomplished. Day two seen Pike as the target on the fly, a personal challenge against the others with me to see how well the fly went against the lure slingers and fly won. Day 3 was more of a big fish day but it just didn’t go according to plan with fish into mid double figures being landed with a lot of effort. All in all a great social visit to the lakes with more in the future to come.

Merry Christmas to you all, hope you have a great Christmas and New Year. All the best and tight lines.

Last week I took advantage of the calm conditions on the sea and was reward with one of the best days fishing I think I have ever had.
Launching the Pro Angler 14 on the ebbing tide instantly found fish attacking small bait fish on the top and first few casts I had fish follow, change of lure and I landed my first bass of the day.
These fish soon moved off with no sign of anymore it was onto the cod, these were playing hard to get but I managed a few undersized fish on a twin tail.
Moving back to the shallows I started catch bass again on a small crank bait and they came thick and fast landing well over 20 before the tide flooded and the fish dispersed. Largest fish was estimated to be around 3-4lb but amazing spot and watching so many fish follow the lure in and striking in view was amazing. Let’s hope the next calm conditions give just as much sport.
