1966 Triumph Herald 1200 Saloon
A quite exceptional and remarkably original 1966 Triumph Herald 1200 Saloon, finished in Royal Blue and showing just 65,000 recorded miles. With only four former keepers, this is a wonderfully preserved example retaining all the charm, character and authenticity of a genuine unrestored 60 year old motor car.
Supplied new by Robert J Blake Automobiles of Brentwood on 2nd May 1966, the Triumph remarkably retains its original stamped service book, with entries dating back to its very first service. The recorded mileage is further supported by previous MOT certificates, while a comprehensive history file contains additional MOTs, parts invoices, receipts and assorted documentation accumulated throughout the car's life.
The interior is particularly impressive. The original blue seats remain in superb condition, together with the original door cards, dashboard wood and headlining. Rather than having been renewed or retrimmed, the cabin has the unmistakable appearance and atmosphere of a carefully cherished original car. Front seat belts.
The bodywork is exceptionally solid, with excellent panels and very good Royal Blue paintwork. Particularly noteworthy are the panel gaps, which are remarkably even and precise throughout , something that is by no means a given on a Triumph Herald. Underneath, the chassis, floors and associated structure are equally impressive, appearing remarkably sound and solid. The radial tyres and exhaust are excellent.
On the road, this is possibly the best driving Herald we have owned. It feels unusually tight and precise, with a lovely smooth engine and none of the looseness that can often characterise cars of this age. Combined with the exceptional panel fit, it gives the impression of a Herald that has never been pulled apart and has simply been carefully maintained and preserved throughout its life.
Importantly, this is not an over-restored example. It retains the detail, character and authenticity that give a genuine survivor its appeal, presenting as an honest and exceptionally well-preserved Herald rather than a car restored into something it never was.
The Triumph Herald remains one of the most straightforward and enjoyable British classics to own. Its simple mechanical design, excellent accessibility and strong parts availability make it an ideal introduction to 1960s motoring, with sensible running and maintenance costs compared with many classics of the period.
Light, charming and full of personality, it is equally at home on a Sunday morning drive, at a local classic car show or simply being enjoyed for the pleasure of driving something from a very different era.
With four former keepers, 65,000 recorded miles, extensive history and exceptional levels of surviving originality, this is a very special Triumph Herald 1200 , a charming, usable and increasingly difficult to find example of one of Britain's best-loved small saloons, ready to be enjoyed by its next custodian.
