If you have a car with a wet belt (timing belt that runs in engine oil) it is very important to have it replaced before it deteriorates. This video shows an example we have in at the minute, a Peugeot 208 with just over 40k miles on the clock. The video shows the oil strainer heavily blocked with deteriorated rubber from the timing belt. The strainer is there to stop debris entering the engine and damaging it. However in this case the strainer is so blocked that it stopped enough oil running through the engine, giving this vehicle oil pressure issues. Many dry timing belt can run for over 100k miles without showing this level of deterioration. Letting a timing belt get to this point puts excessive strain on internal engine components. The belts are expensive to replace but much cheaper than a failed engine.
