What do you do when there are orcas beneath your yacht? For most sailors, it's a situation they would rather never have to contemplate. For James Kenning, it became part of taking ARKYLA beyond familiar waters and into the increasingly notorious orca grounds off the Iberian Peninsula.

And that was only one chapter.

After 47,000 nautical miles and more than a decade of adventures, SAPPHIRE II OF LONDON has returned to Berthon.

She has crossed oceans, passed through the Panama Canal, explored remote Pacific islands, sailed the Great Barrier Reef, anchored off beaches in Komodo National Park and crossed the Indian Ocean before reaching Cape Town.

There was a white line ahead of them.

At first, Steve Dashew wasn't sure what he was looking at.

Then they came over another wave.

Another white line.

Breakers.

Steve and Linda were sailing towards Fiji in the days before GPS. They hadn't had a reliable position for some time, and a sextant sight Steve wasn't entirely convinced by suggested they could be around 80 miles from their dead reckoning position.

They were frighteningly close to finding out which was correct the hard way.

That experience would eventually influence something much bigger: Steve's belief that speed in a cruising yacht wasn't simply about arriving sooner.

It could be a safety feature.
