UNEP's new Limiting Overshoot Spotlight Report https://bit.ly/4guteVi says plainly what many of us have been documenting for years: 1.5°C is no longer a line we might avoid crossing.

It's a line we're living through the crossing of. The report is clear that overshoot isn't a single moment but a pathway — exceedance, peak, and (if we act) decline — and that every fraction of a degree we add to the peak, and every extra year we spend above it, raises the odds of hitting thresholds we can't walk back from.That's the sobering part.

Here's the part that should make us move faster, not slower: overshoot is not a verdict. It's a call to urgency. The report is explicit that mitigation and adaptation have to advance together, starting now — because the depth and length of overshoot are still, today, a matter of choice.

So where do we get speed on mitigation, fast, at scale?

Coal mine methane.
Methane from coal mining — a super-pollutant with outsized near-term warming power — is one of the few levers we can pull immediately, with existing technology, at meaningful volume. Abating it doesn't wait on a decade of infrastructure build-out. It bends the curve now, while the slower decarbonisation of the power and industrial systems catches up. If the next years are about limiting how high we peak and how long we stay there, methane abatement earns its place at the very top of the list.

This is exactly the gap the Clean Exit Campaign exists to close — turning coal mine methane and ventilation air methane abatement from a technical afterthought into a financed, credited, investable climate strategy.

The window UNEP describes is real, and it's still open. Let's use it.

Read something this week that’s stuck with me — an essay by Ingmar Rentzhog, who’s spent the last decade working on climate issues full-time.

Climate – the most important issue ahead of the Swedish elections – is increasingly shaped by misinformation, Johan Rockström writes in Dagens Industri.
For citizens, businesses and investors to make well-informed decisions, Sweden needs a shared, science-based understanding of the climate crisis, he argues. via Stockholm Resilience Centre - https://bit.ly/4iquhXC

Rockström addresses five common misconceptions in the Swedish climate debate:
• “Sweden’s emissions are net negative”
• “Sweden has low per capita emissions”
• “It doesn’t matter what Sweden does”
• “Taking the lead damages our economy”
• “There is no climate crisis”
He also proposes that the government instruct the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency to develop a long-term national information programme on the causes, consequences and possible solutions to the climate crisis.
“People may have different views on political choices, but they must be able to base their views on the same scientifically grounded description of reality. That is a core democratic duty,” he writes.

Anthropic stood up to the Pentagon. Now it needs to stand up for the planet.
In a rare, nearly hour-long Bloomberg interview this June, Anthropic's founders spoke candidly about war, risk, and the weight of consequences — the company didn't shy away from hard questions about Claude's role in conflict. But one consequence never came up: its own carbon footprint.
No published emissions numbers. A data centre deal so large it made SpaceX name water scarcity as a financial risk. And a carbon removal pledge with no baseline to measure it against.

This isn't a hit piece. It's an invitation — to the one AI company that's built its entire identity on taking consequences seriously.

CEOs, mayors, investors, scientists and policymakers keep returning to the same themes:

Climate action is now a business resilience strategy, not just an environmental one Cities are outpacing national governments as innovation labs Green finance has gone from niche to essential.

Methane cuts remain the fastest, cheapest way to slow warming — and still overlooked AI can accelerate progress, but only with good governance Cross-sector collaboration beats going it alone

The takeaway: solutions aren't the bottleneck. The courage to scale them is.
