The clocks go back Sunday.

That means your headlights are about to be doing a lot more work!

Darker evenings mean more hours driving on main beams and you don’t want to be caught short with a broken or faulty headlight when you are driving down the Essex country lanes.

This is our reminder that it’s worth a two-minute check this weekend.

We suggest checking both headlights, both indicators, brake lights, the lot.

Myth: only the Main Dealer can service your Jaguar or Land Rover under warranty.

Nope! Not true (and hasn't been for years).

Under EU Block Exemption (still upheld post-Brexit), any independent specialist using Genuine or OE-equivalent parts, following manufacturer service schedules, can service your vehicle without touching your warranty.

What actually matters isn't who's on the sign outside but whether the work is done to the right standard, with the right parts, recorded properly.

Good.

Now here's what it didn't look at →

Cambelt condition. This one is not tested, not inspected, not even glanced at and on a JLR, a snapped cambelt means engine damage. It's replaced on a mileage or age interval, MOT pass or not.

Brake fluid age. Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, which lowers its boiling point (this means softer, less reliable braking exactly when you need it most). The MOT checks that your brakes work today but it doesn't check what's happening inside the fluid.

General wear. Bushes, mounts, suspension components, you know, the parts that quietly degrade and just make the car feel "a bit off" long before anything fails outright.

That dashboard light that keeps going off but didn't fail you. ABS, engine management, plenty of warning lights don't trigger an MOT fail on their own. Doesn't mean the car's not trying to tell you something.

An MOT is a snapshot, but that doesn’t mean it is total peace of mind for the next 12 months.

Get to know the people behind the workshop.

This week, meet Rob, our Workshop Manager here at DS Automotive.

Rob's three years into the team, with 20 years' experience in the motor trade behind him and one of the faces you might see working on your car next time you're in.

He's usually the first face you'll meet and greet, liaising with customers throughout the day and keeping you up to date on your vehicle's repairs.

When we asked him what keeps him happy at work, he told us:

"Being part of a professional team of individuals all striving to make a difference."

Ever wondered what a typical day looks like at DS Auto?

It starts with the day's cars booked in and ready to go, each one with its own job list, from routine services to full diagnostics.

Our specialist JLR tools come out, and the team gets to work, checking and double-checking every step before a car goes back to its owner.

But no two days are ever quite the same (which is something we secretly love)! We can also help where possible in an emergency as it comes in, fitting them around the schedule to get owners back on the road as quickly as possible. Not because we have to, but because we understand how stressful it can feel to not have your mode of transport.

Today marks the Autumn Equinox!

This is the point where day and night are roughly equal and from here, the nights start drawing in and get longer than the days.

That means more of your driving could happen in the dark! Earlier evenings, dimmer mornings, longer commutes without daylight.

All of this points to something worth checking, headlights, fog lights, brake lights, and indicators!

Small thing to check, but it makes a real difference once the darker evenings properly set in.
