🚗👀 MIRRORS, MIRRORS… DON’T FORGET THEM! 👀🚗

Joining a main road or an M-road/motorway? Your mirrors are one of your most important safety checks! 🪞

Before you move out or join the faster road, make sure you know what’s around you and what’s approaching from behind.

✅ Check your centre and right/left mirrors as appropriate
✅ Look for vehicles already on the main road
✅ Check your blind spot when necessary
✅ Adjust your speed to match the traffic safely
✅ Make sure there’s a safe gap before joining
✅ Don’t rely on your mirrors alone — look properly!

Remember: Mirrors aren’t just for changing lanes. They help you build a picture of what’s happening around your car before you make a decision.

🚗🔄 ROUNDABOUTS: APPROACH & LANE DISCIPLINE 🔄🚗

One of the biggest things to get right on a roundabout is your approach and lane discipline.

👉 Before you reach the roundabout:
✅ Check your mirrors early
✅ Look for signs and road markings
✅ Choose the correct lane BEFORE entering
✅ Adjust your speed so you can stop if necessary
✅ Keep a good lookout for other road users

🛣️ Lane discipline is key!

➡️ Turning left / first exit: Usually approach in the left lane and signal left.

⬆️ Going straight ahead: Follow the lane markings and signs. Don’t automatically assume the left lane is always correct.

⬅️➡️ Turning right / later exits: Usually approach in the right lane, signal right and maintain your lane until it’s time to exit.

⚠️ Remember: Your lane doesn’t end just because you’ve entered the roundabout! Follow the road markings, stay in your lane and don’t drift across other vehicles.

👀 Mirrors → Signal → Position → Speed → Look

Good planning on the approach gives you a much safer and smoother roundabout.

🚗 HOW DO YOU KEEP THE CAR IN A STRAIGHT LINE? 🛣️

One of the first things learners need to master is keeping the car smoothly and safely within their lane.

It can feel harder than it looks, but try these simple tips 👇

👀 LOOK WELL AHEAD
Don’t stare at the road immediately in front of the bonnet. Look further ahead and use where you want the car to go as your reference point.

👐 KEEP YOUR HANDS RELAXED
Avoid gripping the steering wheel too tightly. A relaxed grip makes small steering corrections much easier.

↔️ MAKE SMALL CORRECTIONS
If the car starts drifting, don’t suddenly turn the wheel. Make small, gentle adjustments and allow the car to settle.

🪞 USE YOUR MIRRORS
Regularly check your mirrors so you know where you are in relation to the road and other traffic.

🎯 DON’T FIXATE ON THE KERB
Looking directly at the kerb can actually make you steer towards it. Look where you want the car to go instead.

🚘 REMEMBER — THE CAR FOLLOWS YOUR VISION
Look ahead, stay relaxed and make smooth adjustments.

💡 Top tip:
If you’re constantly correcting the steering, try looking further ahead. You’ll often find the car becomes much easier to control.

🚗🚗🚗 WHAT IS CAR BUNCHING? 🚗🚗🚗

Ever noticed a line of cars travelling along with hardly any space between them?

That’s often called car bunching — and it can create some serious problems. ⚠️

Car bunching happens when drivers travel too close together, often because they are following the vehicle in front rather than planning and looking further ahead.

❌ Less time to react
❌ Poor visibility of what’s happening ahead
❌ Increased risk of rear-end collisions
❌ Makes it harder for other road users to emerge safely
❌ Can cause unnecessary braking and acceleration

👀 As a driver, don’t just watch the car directly in front of you.

Look well ahead, anticipate what’s happening and maintain a safe following distance.

Remember the 2-second rule in good conditions — and increase the gap in poor weather or when visibility is reduced.

🚗🔄 WHY DO WE USE INDICATORS ON ROUNDABOUTS? 🔄🚗

Indicators aren’t there just to make your test examiner happy! 😜

They’re there to communicate your intentions to other road users.

✅ Turning left?
Signal left as you approach the roundabout and keep it on as you exit.

✅ Going straight ahead?
Usually, you don’t need to signal on approach. Signal left after passing the exit before yours, so others know you’re leaving.

✅ Turning right?
Signal right on approach, position correctly, then change to your left indicator after passing the exit before yours.

🚨 Remember: Your indicator doesn’t give you priority — it simply tells other road users what you intend to do.

Good signalling helps pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists and other drivers understand what you’re planning.

👀 Mirror → Signal → Position → Speed → Look → Go

Don’t just indicate because you’re told to — understand WHY you’re indicating.
