🌙🚗 THEORY CHECK — PARKING AT NIGHT!

When may you park on the RIGHT-HAND side of the road at night?

✅ When you’re in a ONE-WAY street, where parking is permitted, facing the direction of traffic.

❌ Having your sidelights on isn’t the answer.
❌ Being more than 10 metres from a junction isn’t the answer.
❌ Parking under a lamppost doesn’t give you special parking powers either! 😂💡

On a two-way road at night, you MUST NOT park facing against the traffic flow unless you’re in a recognised parking space.

On a one-way street, either side can face the same direction as traffic — that’s the key! 🔑 Always check the parking restrictions too.

🦌🐎🚲 YOU’RE SHARING THE ROAD—EXPECT SOME COMPANY!

These warning signs help you prepare:

🦌 Wild animals — animals may enter the road unexpectedly. Scan the verges and be ready to slow down.

🐎 Accompanied horses or ponies — expect horses with riders or handlers in or crossing the road. Give them time and space.

🚲 Cycle route ahead — cyclists may be joining or crossing the road ahead. Look carefully before you reach it.

A warning sign doesn’t mean the hazard will appear every time. It means you should be ready if it does.

The deer hasn’t read the Highway Code, so you’ll need to do the planning! 😂

👀🚗 Hazard perception — spotting the danger before it develops!

Good driving means looking ahead, noticing clues and asking yourself: “What could happen next?”

⚠️ A ball rolling into the road — could a child follow?
⚠️ A parked car with someone inside — could a door open?
⚠️ A pedestrian near a crossing — could they step out?
⚠️ A vehicle waiting at a junction — could it pull out?

Spotting these clues early gives you more time to check your mirrors, adjust your speed and leave space to respond safely. It also helps make your driving smoother, with less sudden braking.

✅ Look well ahead.
✅ Scan both sides of the road.
✅ Keep checking as situations change.
✅ Be prepared without assuming what others will do.

Seeing a hazard is the first step. Planning how to deal with it is what makes the difference.

🚴 KNOW YOUR SIGNS! 🚗

This sign means WITH-FLOW CYCLE LANE ✅

“With-flow” means cyclists travel in the same direction as the traffic beside them. Think: WITH the flow = SAME way! 🧠

For drivers:
👀 Check mirrors and blind spots before changing direction.
↩️ Don’t cut across cyclists going straight ahead when you turn left.
🚴 Give cyclists plenty of space — a painted line isn’t a protective force field!

And no… it’s not an extra lane for squeezing past a queue! 😉😂

⚠️ THE ROAD IS GIVING YOU A HEADS-UP… USE IT! 👀

Red-bordered triangles warn you about hazards ahead:

➡️ Bend to right — assess the bend and get your speed right before you reach it.

↔️ Road narrows on both sides — expect less space and assess approaching traffic carefully. This sign alone doesn’t give either direction priority.

🚗 Slippery road — reduce speed as needed, leave more space and keep braking, steering and acceleration smooth.

Don’t just name the sign for your instructor—show them you’ve understood it through your driving! 😂

Spot it early. Think about what could happen. Adjust in good time. 👍

🔴🔵 “I’LL ONLY BE A MINUTE!” ISN’T A PARKING EXEMPTION 😂

These signs look similar, but there’s an important difference:

🚫 ONE RED DIAGONAL LINE = NO WAITING
You cannot park or wait while the restriction applies. Brief boarding, alighting or loading may be allowed, depending on other restrictions.

❌ RED CROSS = NO STOPPING
You cannot choose to stop where the restriction applies, even just to pick someone up, unless an exemption permits it.

👀 Check any plates for times, the area covered and exceptions.

And switching your hazard lights on? That doesn’t magically turn the road into your personal parking bay! 😅

🔵 BLUE CIRCLES: INSTRUCTIONS, NOT SUGGESTIONS! 👀

These signs tell you what you MUST do:

⬆️ Ahead only — follow the road ahead. No sneaky left or right turn!

↰ Turn left ahead — you must take the left turn indicated.

↙️ Keep left — pass to the left of the sign or obstruction.

💡 Keep left and turn left ahead mean different things. One tells you which side to pass; the other tells you where to turn.

Look ahead, check your mirrors and prepare smoothly.

Your sat nav might have an opinion… the road sign has the final say! 😂

🔴 ROAD SIGNS AREN’T JUST THERE TO DECORATE THE PAVEMENT! 😂

A red ring usually tells you something is prohibited. Here are four worth knowing:

🏍️🚗 No motor vehicles — the motorcycle and car symbol means motor vehicles are prohibited, subject to any signed exceptions.

🚲 No cycling — you must not ride a pedal cycle past this sign.

🚗🚗 No overtaking — overtaking restrictions apply. Seeing a gap doesn’t cancel the sign!

↩️ No U-turns — find another safe, legal route to change direction.

👀 Look for any plates underneath explaining exceptions or when restrictions apply.

Spot signs early so you’ve got time to plan. “I only noticed it as I drove past” isn’t the aim! 😅

🦺🛑 A PERSON HOLDING A STOP SIGN ISN’T ASKING FOR A FAVOUR!

Two situations learners need to recognise:

🏫 SCHOOL CROSSING PATROL
When the patrol displays their STOP sign to traffic, you MUST stop. Wait while people cross and until the sign is withdrawn and the road is clear.

🚧 TEMPORARY STOP/GO SIGNS
Often used at roadworks to control traffic through a restricted section.

🔴 STOP: Stop and wait.
🟢 GO: Proceed carefully, only when the route is clear and safe.

GO doesn’t mean “launch it like you’re on a starting grid”! 🏎️😂

Look well ahead, reduce your speed early and give the people working or crossing plenty of space.

🛑 STOP MEANS STOP… NOT “I SLOWED DOWN A BIT”! 😂

These two signs need different responses:

🛑 STOP — red octagon
You MUST come to a complete stop at the stop line, even if the road looks clear. Then observe carefully and only move when it’s safe.

🔻 GIVE WAY — upside-down triangle
Give way to traffic on the main road. Slow down, assess the junction and stop when necessary. You can continue without stopping only when it’s safe.

👀 With either sign, approach slowly enough to see properly and make a safe decision.

And if the driver behind gets impatient? They can wait. Your safety matters more than their dramatic hand gestures! 🤷‍♂️
