Ritchies Training Centre was established in 1983 by Walter Ritchie, Walter decided the only way to engage high quality drivers was to train them himself. With over 25 years experience in the road haulage industry and operating 35 vehicles performing local and long distance work, he was well aware of the needs of the industry. Since then, PCV, Forklift and construction plant have been added to our

training portfolio, as well as classroom-based courses such as ADR, CPC and DGSA. We provide training in all areas for private individuals, companies, most of the large district councils in Scotland, The MOD and most of the utility companies throughout the country, as well as being a CTP Resettlement Training Centre. As well as our own driving maneuvering area we also have our own “construction site”, used specifically for training on a variety of plant equipment including our 3 Tower Cranes. Over the years the business has expanded rapidly and has included the building of our purpose built training centre opened in December 2001 by The Right Hon Michael Martin MP Speaker of the House of Commons. Located 5 minutes from Glasgow city centre, as well as our recent move to brand new first class accommodation at Firhill Court. The Most Common (and Preventable) ADR Roadside Prohibition

Fire extinguishers might seem like a small part of dangerous goods transport compliance until they become the reason a vehicle fails a roadside inspection.

When a transport unit is carrying dangerous goods under ADR, the fire-fighting equipment on board must be correct, suitable and ready to use. ADR requires portable fire extinguishers suitable for fire classes A, B and C:

In plain English, that means coverage for fires involving solid combustible materials, flammable liquids and flammable gases — exactly the sort of risk profile that can exist around vehicles, fuel, packaging and dangerous goods operations.

The minimum extinguisher provision depends on the maximum permissible mass of the transport unit:

But compliance is not just about having extinguishers somewhere on the vehicle.

They must be suitable for vehicle use, comply with EN 3 Portable Fire Extinguishers, Part 7, be inspected, sealed, marked with the inspection date or permitted period of use, protected from the weather, and readily accessible to the crew.

That matters, because roadside checks by DVSA and the police continue to find the same avoidable failures: missing seals, no pressure, out-of-date inspections, worn or missing maintenance records, unclear markings, extinguishers buried in lockers or under bunks, and containers that are not weatherproof.

In one recent roadside inspection exercise, 242 vehicles were stopped. 86 were found to be non-compliant with dangerous goods requirements. 50 prohibition notices were issued and 24 of those related to fire extinguishers.

That is almost half of the prohibition notices linked to one piece of equipment.
