Listen out for:

😱 Squealing: often worn brake pads or a slipping drive belt. ⚙️ Grinding: brakes that may be worn down to the metal. Get these checked quickly. 🔨 Knocking over bumps: could be worn suspension or steering parts. 🦴 Rattling underneath: often a loose exhaust or heat shield.

🔋 Is your battery ready for winter?

Flat batteries are one of the most common causes of winter breakdowns. Cold mornings make your battery work much harder, so a battery that's been fine all summer can suddenly give up on the first frosty day.

Watch out for these warning signs:

🔑 Slow to start: the engine turns over sluggishly on cold mornings. ⚠️ Battery warning light: this can mean a charging fault, not just a tired battery. 📅 4–5 years old or more: older batteries struggle most in the cold. 🔁 Lots of short trips: short journeys don't give the battery time to fully recharge.

🚗 Half term road trip? Check before you go!

A car loaded with the family and luggage, driving a long way, is under a lot more strain than on the daily school run. A few quick checks now can save your trip:

🛞 Tyres: check the tread, and set the pressures for a full load (it's in your handbook or on the door sill). 🛢️ Oil and coolant: top up before a long journey, not halfway there. 💦 Screenwash: autumn roads are mucky. Use a winter-strength mix. 💡 Lights: the evenings are darker now the clocks have gone back. Check every bulb is working.

🕐 The clocks go back this Sunday (25 October), so from next week the drive home will be in the dark.

Darker evenings mean your lights and visibility matter more than ever. Can you see clearly, and can other drivers see you?

Quick checks before the clocks change:

💡 Headlights: bright, clean and aimed properly so you don't dazzle oncoming drivers. 🔴 Brake lights and indicators: the ones you can't easily check on your own. 🌧️ Wiper blades: smears and streaks get much worse with oncoming headlight glare. 🪟 Windscreen: chips and cracks catch the light at night. It's better to fix them early.

🚨 Warning light on your dashboard? Don't drive on a guess.

Heading off somewhere this weekend? If a light has popped up on your dash, your car is telling you something needs attention. It's always better to find out before a long drive than halfway through one.

Here are the common ones:

🟠 Engine light: it could be something minor or something bigger. Our diagnostic equipment will tell us exactly what's going on. 🔴 Oil pressure: if this comes on red, stop safely and switch off the engine as soon as you can. 🔴 Battery / charging: often a charging fault, not just a flat battery. Get it tested before it leaves you stranded. 🟠 Tyre pressure: low pressure means less grip and longer braking distances, especially on wet autumn roads.
