Learning to drive is an exciting journey, and every new skill you develop brings you closer to becoming a confident, independent driver.

One of the things I enjoy most about teaching is that every pupil is unique.

Some learn best through practical experience, others through explanation, demonstration or a combination of approaches.

That's why I believe driving lessons should be tailored to the individual, not the other way around.

At AWARE Driving, I focus on each pupil's knowledge, understanding and ability, selecting and developing the skills that best support their progress.

Take junctions, for example. Rather than simply learning how to turn left or right, pupils develop skills they can use in many different driving situations.

Heard about driving test faults, but not sure what they mean? 🚗

There are 3 categories of faults you can make during your driving test:

A dangerous fault: this involves actual danger to you, the examiner, the public or property.

A serious fault: this is something potentially dangerous.

A driving fault: this is not potentially dangerous, but if you keep making the same fault, it could become a serious fault.

You’ll pass your driving test if you make no more than 15 driving faults and make zero serious or dangerous faults. ✅

At AWARE Driving, my approach is simple. We teach the skills first, then apply them to different driving situations.

Awareness, planning, judgement and control aren't just four things to remember. Each involves smaller skills that we develop and bring together as pupils progress.

Roundabouts are just one example of where those skills come together.

And here's the important part: those same skills apply to junctions, meeting traffic, country roads and everyday driving.

My aim isn't to teach you how to pass a particular roundabout. It's to give you the understanding, confidence and ability to deal with unfamiliar situations independently.

🚗 LEARNING TO DRIVE WITH AWARE – WEEK 1 OF 16

YOUR FIRST DRIVING LESSON – WHAT TO EXPECT

Starting driving lessons is an exciting milestone, but it's perfectly normal to feel a little nervous beforehand.

After more than 35 years of teaching, one thing I've learnt is that no two pupils are the same.

Here are a few things worth knowing before your first lesson.

✅ Make sure you have your provisional driving licence ready.

✅ Wear comfortable footwear that allows you to feel and control the pedals properly.

✅ Don't worry if you've never sat behind a steering wheel before. That's what learning is all about!

✅ You don't need to have passed your theory test before starting practical lessons.

✅ Be honest about anything you're worried about. The more I understand how you're feeling, the better I can support you.

Most importantly, don't compare yourself with friends or family. Everyone develops their driving skills at a different pace.

My aim isn't simply to teach you how to pass a test. It's to help you become a safe, confident and independent driver.

🚗 WHY AWARE?

Nervous or anxious about learning to drive?

You're not alone, and you don't need to feel confident before you start. Building that confidence is part of learning.

I'm trained in mental health awareness and have extensive experience working with nervous and anxious learners. Lessons are calm, patient and adapted to you — there's no pressure to learn at somebody else's pace.

Made a mistake? That's OK. We'll talk through what happened, understand why, and learn from it.

For me, a successful lesson isn't just about what manoeuvre you've mastered. It's also about you getting out of the car feeling a little more confident than when you got in.
