The newly published Clearing Cluster Mu****on Remnants 2026 report highlights the growing role of mechanisation and robotics in mine action.
During 2025, Ukraine deployed 297 mechanical assets to tackle explosive ordnance:
- 229 for demining
- 68 for ground preparation
- A further 15 mechanical and robotic systems underwent testing
But successful deployment is not determined by headline specifications alone. Terrain, vegetation, contamination, operator requirements and equipment certification all influence how effectively technology performs in the field.
Kosovo provides a useful example; on suitable open terrain, the Scorpion detection system achieved an average of 168m² per day, compared with 82m² per day using a conventional large loop detector. However, its performance remained constrained in steep or densely vegetated areas.
The message is clear: technology delivers the greatest operational value when it is properly tested, certified and matched to the task.
