If I had a £1 every time I got asked this question I'd have been able to retire by now.
Remember what works for you, doesn't mean it works for everyone. Its your learning journey, no-one else's. Be a safe confident driver by putting the time, effort and patience into it and you'll have a better chance of surviving these dangerous roads. drive safely people beep beep 🚘
🚗 HOW LONG DOES IT REALLY TAKE TO PASS YOUR DRIVING TEST?
One of the most common questions I get is, “How many lessons will I need before I’m ready for my test?”
And the answer is… how long is a piece of string? 🤣
The DVSA has previously quoted an average of 45 hours of professional driving lessons PLUS 22 hours of private practice before passing.
Now, let’s put that into perspective! 👀
⏰ 1 hour a week: Approximately 12–18 months
⏰ 1.5 hours a week: Approximately 9–12 months
⏰ 2 hours a week: Approximately 6–9 months
These are rough estimates that allow for holidays, illness and the occasional missed lesson.
Of course, everyone learns at a different pace. Some people will need considerably fewer hours, while others will need more.
And that’s absolutely fine!
But here’s something I really want learners to understand…
Learning to drive isn’t just about the number of lessons you have. It’s about how consistently you’re learning and how much you’re retaining between lessons.
When you’re only having an hour a week, sometimes a good chunk of that lesson is spent refreshing skills from the previous week.
More frequent practice can help you build confidence, retain information and develop your skills more consistently.
And remember, passing your test isn’t the ultimate goal.
Becoming a safe, independent driver is. ❤️
So please don’t compare your progress to your friends, siblings or someone on TikTok who claims they passed after 10 hours. 🤣
Your driving journey is YOUR driving journey.
💬 How many hours of lessons did you have before passing your test?
I’d love to hear everyone’s experiences!
