GrantMotorsport - CCRC - Grand Finals

The team were back at Castle Combe on Saturday for Grand Finals day. We had drivers in the fight for their respective championships so we were hoping for a successful day!

CCRC Saloons Championship -

Dave Spiller was back in the Audi TT. An incident in qualifying meant he couldn’t take part in the rest of the day. Dave still managed to hold on to P3 in class after a challenging year.

Jack Boulton was back out in the VW Golf. A successful qualifying meant he was lining up P2 and P1. Jack backed up his qualifying by having two strong races. Finishing P2 in the first and then having a very close race long battle with Brockbank and Chamberlain, ultimately finishing 3rd!

Jez Williams was back out in the 106. A day plagued with small mechanical issues meant he missed out on valuable points in the fight for the overall championship. The car ran perfectly in the last race allowing him to score max points showing the great pace Jez has had all year. Jez finishes the season as Class Champion and just shy of 3rd in the overall championship. Well done Jez!

CCRC Hot Hatch Championship -

Todd Carter our new rookie driver was welcomed to the team for his debut. He was racing a Mini in Class E. It was a learning day for Todd to prepare him for next year. In his first qualifying session he secured two P2s out of all the minis. Race one saw him have a race long battle with the other minis, until a tyre delamination brought his race to an end. He didn’t get back out for race two as there was a problem with the exhaust meaning the car was too loud.

Crofton Woodhatch was back in the Hot Hatch Mini with potential at the overall Championship win, after already securing himself as Class E Champion at the last round! He had a perfect day topping every session in his class, scoring max points. As well as setting another lap record of a 1.16.2. In the second race he secured Vice Champion of the Hot Hatch Championship. Well done Crofton!

A big thank you to every member of the team for all their hard work this season. As well as a big thank you to all the team, staff and Marshals at Castle Combe Circuit/ Castle Combe Racing Club for the season as a whole!

See you in 2025…

GrantMotorsport - CCRC - Round 5

We were back at Castle Combe on Monday for Combe Countdown with cars out in the Saloon and Hot Hatch championships, as well as the Mark Sutton Remembrance race!

CCRC Saloons Championship -

Dave Spiller in the Audi TT was back fighting at the front. He secured two P3s in qualifying showing some strong pace. Two of Dave’s most competitive races pace wise saw him bring home P2 in both and taking fastest lap in the first race.

Jack Boulton was back out in the VW Golf for the second time this year. Setting a pb in qualifying saw Jack line up p4 for both races! He had two really positive races finishing p3 in the first race going nearly a second faster than his pb and p4 in the second!

Jez Williams in the 106 took class pole for both races showing great pace. The first race for Jez was an easy lights to flag class victory managing a sizeable gap to p2 in class. The second race didn’t go to plan with the 106 having a mechanical failure meaning Jez had to DNF.

CCRC Hot Hatch Championship -

Crofton Woodhatch had another good day in the Mini. He had a shortened qualifying after a small car issue, that was quickly sorted after the session, but was still able to secure two p1s in class. Race one saw him build an 8 second gap to p2 in class just before the race got cut short due to a red flag! Race two was a bit more of a fight seeing him stuck to the rear bumper of his class rival Jensen the whole race. He came home to finish p2 with the cars split by only 0.215 at the line!

Mark Sutton Remembrance -

Dave Spiller teamed up with fellow Saloon car Championship driver Harrison Chamberlain for the 30 minute race. Up against some mighty Gt cars they were able to qualify p3. After 30 minutes they finished p3 only a handful of seconds behind a Lamborghini Super Trofeo. Well done to both of you!

There is one round left with Grand Finals day on the 5th of October, see you there!

Also a big thank you to Scott Jack Flash Photography for capturing the day perfectly for us 📸

GrantMotorsport - CCRC - Round 4

We were back at a sunny Castle Combe on Saturday for the Combe Challenge race day. We had four cars out racing in the Saloons and Hot Hatch championships.

CCRC Saloons Championship -

Dave Spiller in the Audi TT was back on form qualifying p2 for both of his races! He had two solid races bringing home a p3 in race one and a p2 in race two. A confidence building day for Dave after a tricky first half of the season!

Jez Williams was flying again in the 106 securing class pole by over a second and a half for both races, getting closer and closer to Geoff Ryall’s long standing lap record for the class! He backed it up with two well managed races bringing the car home for two p1s in class and two p4s overall. Jez has extended his class lead and closed the gap in the overall championship and is 100% in the fight!

Dan Williams had another solid day in the Saxo. After a slight problem in qualifying meaning he wasn’t able to set any representative lap times which was quickly resolved by the team. He fought back through in the races to secure two class p2s setting a pb along the way!

CCRC Hot Hatch Championship -

Crofton Woodhatch had another successful day in the hot hatch Mini. In qualifying he set two pbs which meant he was lining up p2 and p1 in class for the races! Two entertaining races saw him bring home both class wins and both fastest laps, further improving his own class lap record by 4 tenths. Having a perfect day in terms of results keeps him firmly in the overall championship fight and extends the Mini class lead!

There is a short break now until the penultimate rounds of the championships at the end of August, see you there!

GrantMotorsport - CCRC - Midseason report

It’s been an up and down first half of the season across both CCRC Saloons and Hot Hatch championships. A lot of work has been put in behind the scenes from everyone at Grant Motorsport to keep the team going and being able to race!

CCRC Saloons Championship -

After a tough start to the year for Dave Spiller (Audi TT Class A) with an accident and mechanical problems in the first two rounds, he was able to bounce back strong in round 3 and come home with a P2 overall and his first outright race win in car racing! Well done Dave!

Jez Williams (Peugeot 106 Class C) has had a strong first half of the season putting in some great results, including two class wins and being awarded driver of the day at the first round of the championship! A DNF in the last round due to a mechanical problem Jez will be looking to further increase his Class lead in the second half of the season and fight for the overall championship!

Dan Williams (Citroen Saxo Class D) has had a successful first half of the season finishing on the class podium in every race and getting two class wins. Dan sits second overall in the championship so will be pushing to try and claim that top spot come the end of the year!

Jack Boulton (VW Golf Class A) has only done the one round this year as he is focused more on building his Honda CRX! He joined the grid for round 3 and came home with his first two podiums claiming a second place and a third place. Well done Jack!

CCRC Hot Hatch Championship -

After a problematic start to the season with a couple of car issues in round one, Crofton (Mini Cooper S Class E) has acclimatised to racing well and been able to take class wins in every race in rounds 2 and 3 of the championship. He was also awarded driver of the day at the second round of the championship!

He currently sits P1 in the class championship and P2 in the overall Championship, after dropped scores, and is looking for more coming into the second half of the season!

The team will be pushing in the second half of the season to continue to get some more strong results, starting with CCRC Combe Challenge on Saturday 3rd August!

30/04/2023

On the eve of the 3rd rounds of the Castle Combe Saloon Car Championship and Hot Hatch Challenge Series, we take a look back to the first and second rounds on 10th April!

And what a mix of weather conditions it was! Qualifying for both races could be described as very 'wet' but the clouds would pass before the afternoon giving dry races all round.

We also took the time during the lunch break to honour and pay our respects to Mark Sutton, former Castle Combe Saloon Car Champion who we sadly lost earlier this year by conducting a minutes silence with the Saloon cars lined up on the grid.

QUALIFYING
Hot Hatch debutant, the 16yo George Walker managed a cracking couple of wet laps in the Liqui Moly GMS R53 Mini Cooper S to secure Class POLE and 8th overall for the first race and an duplicate POLE and amazing 5th overall for the second round in the challenging conditions.

Meanwhile defending Class Champion Antony Weeks in the Class D Liqui Moly Citroen Saxo managed equal Class POLE positions for both races lining up 6th and 5th for the two Saloon Car Championship races with Dave Spiller returning in the GMS Audi TT lined up 10th (4th in Class) for both rounds.

We were also joined for the season opener by Dan Williams and Jack Boulton in the Diesel and Petrol Golf GTi's respectively, lining up 14th and 16th for the first and 13th/15th for the second.

And last but not least, Gareth Haycock brought along his Mini Cooper S to line up as Guest POLE and 22nd overall for the Welsh Sports & Saloon Car Championship.

1st ROUNDS
Unfortunately, as is quite normal for the first rounds of the season, all races suffered from attritions throughout the grid and the first round races saw Haycock (WRDA) drop out after the first lap and Walker (HH Mini S) after 9 laps - a disappointing result for his debut in the Series and circuit racing.

Meanwhile Weeks (Saxo) didn't have it plain sailing and a clutch issue saw him drop to 2nd in Class and 11th overall once the turbocharged cars came through from the back, including Spiller (TT) who powered his way to 3rd OVERALL and in Class A and Boulton (Golf) who finished 6th overall and 5th in Class. Williams (Golf TDi) then finished 17th overall and 7th in Class. Well done to Dave and Antony for their podiums!

2nd ROUNDS
With gremlins sorted and after lining up plum last in 28th, Haycock (WRDA) brought the Mini S home with a Class WIN and 18th overall! Well done Gareth!! But unfortunately after working tirelessly on the car during the break, Walker (HH Mini S) was sidelined after just 2 laps having yet another alternator fail :(

For the second round of the Saloon Car Championship we were hopeful a few niggles that plagued the first round was sorted and despite a valiant attempt to regain the Class lead from the start, Weeks (Saxo) dropped back into 2nd in Class and crossed the line 12th overall for another podium and Boulton (Golf) rose through the grid once again to finish 6th overall and 5th in Class A.

Meanwhile Williams (Golf TDi) and Spiller (TT) both suffered disappointing retirements after 7 and 2 laps respectively.

Composure regained and a healthy gap between these and the next round on Bank Holiday Monday 1st May mean we're sorted and ready to grid up! Remember to come and say hi if your there on the day!

We’re back for the next of our 2023 Team GMS Driver Announcements!

Continuing with an almost youngster! Grant Motorsport are excited to announce the continuation of DAVE SPILLER in his Audi TT. For the second season Dave will be competing with the big boys in the 2023 Castle Combe Saloon Championship Class A supported by LIQUI MOLY Team GMS!

Dave stepped up to cars in 2019 following his successes in karting; he won 2 championships, 2 South West Championships, and 1 Celtic Championship amongst other successes. Dave’s proudest year was winning the 2017 177 Rotax championship at Dunkeswell by winning 80% of the races in the season whilst winning the Southwest Championship with 100% win rate.

Dave competed in the Castle Combe Hot Hatch series in 2019, until through no fault of his own, his season was cut short. This is when GMS stepped in to assist in developing Dave’s next Mini, in which he proved to be one of the fastest Mini’s round Combe.
For 2022 Dave took the huge step up into the Audi TT, he took to the car immediately qualifying P3 & P2 for his first meeting with minimal testing!

Dave said “The plan for last year was to familiarise myself with the new car as it is massively faster, I definitely achieved this finishing 3rd in Class A at my first attempt. I also had one of my best ever races finishing second to Tony Hutchings which, if I’m honest, I could have won. For 2023 I feel comfortable in the car and with Grantley’s wealth of experience feel confident for what we can achieve.”

The team’s Media Day and official launch will be at Castle Combe Circuit on 18th March 2023 with the first round taking place on 10th April 2023. As we look to increase our coverage and social media for 2023, make sure you follow us on Facebook and Instagram to keep up to date with announcements, news and behind the scenes footage.

We’re back for another of our 2023 Team GMS Driver Announcements!

Sticking with the young protagonists making their debuts with Grant Motorsport this season, we are proud to announce that the freshly ARDS qualified, Team GMS Saloon Car Scholarship driver GEORGE WALKER will be stepping up to a full sized car in the 2023 Castle Combe Racing Club Hot Hatch Challenge Series supported by LIQUI MOLY Team GMS!

George has been karting since the age of 7 competing in the English, Open, Southern & South West Championships and secured the Cadet and Minimax Lap Records at the Mansell Raceway.

As 2020 Mansell Raceway Junior Rotax Champion to back up several podium championship positions and overall race wins, George finished 5th in the Rotax Festival from over 80 drivers! After supporting Grant Motorsport for a number of years, George is finally old enough to step up and join us on the grid in a specifically built Mini Cooper S with team sponsors, Liqui Moly.

Team GMS boss Grantley Woodhatch said “We’ve been working with George and supporting his karting for a number of years. It’s been a privilege to watch him grow and develop on the karting scene with some fantastic results along the way, so it was only natural for him to jump on board as soon as he secured his ARDS licence.”

George said, “Having had the support of Grant and the team at GMS throughout my karting and being able to watch and support them at Caslte Combe, just like David Spiller, it seems the perfect natural progression to step into saloon car racing with the Mini and Liqui Moly and naturally, the Hot Hatch Challenge at Castle Combe is the perfect place to start.”

Welcome to the first in a series of 2023 Team GMS Driver Announcements.

Starting with our young guns, Grant Motorsport are proud to announce the arrival of British Championship race winner and multiple UK Karting Champion JEZ WILLIAMS!

Having won the Clay Pigeon Kart Club Championship, Vice O Plate Championship, Rotax Festival in 2021 and finishing as Runner-Up in the 2022 Ginetta Scholarship, Jez was unlucky to contract COVID-19 at the end of 2022 missing the final two rounds of the British Championship finishing 4th in the UK.

Joining Team GMS in the former Matt Parr, Class-C Championship contending Peugeot 106 GTi, Grantley Woodhatch said “We’re delighted to welcome Jez to the team for the 2023 season at Castle Combe. Originally we were looking to run him in his own Mini Cooper S, however when the opportunity to run the former Matt Parr Peugeot 106 GTi presented itself, with Jez’s natural speed and ability it was a no-brainer to throw him in at the deep end and we can’t wait to see what he can do”.

Jez said “Racing is my passion and my life. I want to continue to learn, be successful and above all win. Grantley and the team at Grant Motorsport have provided the perfect opportunity for me to jump into production saloon car racing and make the step up into cars whilst following the same development path as Alex Kite and Matt Parr”.

The Castle Combe Saloon Car Championship is the perfect stepping stone towards joining the TCR UK Championship and GT racing with Grant Motorsport.
