Navy Wings Seafire, Harvard and Wasp to take to the skies at Ayr shore front
These three historic aircraft are part of the Navy Wings core collection, owned and operated by the Fly Navy Heritage Trust.
Navy Wings is a collection of naval aircraft of historical importance, preserved and flown with the aim of educating the public about naval history and paying tribute to men and women who have flown, maintained or contributed in any way to the operation of aircraft in the Fleet.
The Seafire MkXVII SX336 entered service with the Royal Navy in 1946 as a high-performance carrier-based fighter aircraft. It was withdrawn from service in the 1950s and was re-built by Kennet Aviation with a certificate of Airworthiness issued in 2003. The Seafire’s first post-restoration flight was in 2006, and it was acquired by Navy Wings in 2021.
The Harvard G-NWHF is Navy Wing’s most recent acquisition and is primarily used to train their pilots. The Havard family dates back to the 1930s and was used to train pilots of the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF), United States Navy, Royal Air Force, Royal Canadian Air Force and other air forces of the British Commonwealth during World War II and into the 1970s.
The Westland Wasp HAS Mk1 was a first-generation jet engine helicopter built for the Royal Navy, introduced to service in 1964. This versatile helicopter has anti-submarine capabilities but was used for a variety of functions across its lifespan, including for training and civilian evacuation. This aircraft was retired from service in 1994 and now flies as a display aircraft with Royal Navy Markings.
