Your chip is just the tip of the iceberg.
Most drivers look at a small chip and think it can wait. But your windshield is made of two layers of glass with a laminate layer in the middle. A rock chip creates a pocket of trapped air between those layers, and that damaged area is constantly under pressure.
Heat, cold, vibration, and time can cause that pressure to spread into a crack. The chip that looks fine right now already has the damage underneath. A cold night or a hot afternoon just finishes the job.
