Every now and then, the Great Barrier Reef turns it on in a completely different way.

Last week we had one of those rare days when the conditions lined up and there were waves to be found out on the reef.

We loaded the boards onto our two custom centre consoles, headed offshore and spent the day chasing waves in a pretty extraordinary place.

Not your average day on the GBR.

Diving the Great Barrier Reef is incredible however you do it. Doing it from the luxury and comfort of The Aroona, with an experienced crew and the freedom to explore some of the reef’s more remote corners, makes it something else entirely.

Spend the day blowing bubbles with the fish, then climb back aboard, rinse off, relax and sit down to a chef-prepared meal and a glass of whatever you like to sip as the sun goes down.🌞

We were pleased to attend the launch of the 2026 Wet Tropics Waterways Health Report Card and proudly support this year's Reef & Rivers magazine.

The report highlights the resilience of our region's waterways, with no catchment receiving a poor rating despite recent marine heatwaves, flooding and cyclones. It's a reminder that long-term investment in research, restoration and collaboration really does make a difference.

Spending so much of our time on the Great Barrier Reef gives us a genuine appreciation for the work being done to protect these waterways. Congratulations to the Wet Tropics Waterways team and everyone who contributed to this year's report and magazine.

We get a lot of questions about the Ribbon Reefs, mostly because they are sitting right on the edge of the continental shelf.

This isolated, 120-kilometre stretch of narrow reefs acts as a massive natural breakwater. It blocks the open ocean swell to create incredibly calm, clear lagoons on the inside. Because it is so far from the mainland, there is no coastal runoff. The visibility out here is second to none, making it a healthy sanctuary for roughly 1,500 species of marine life.Planning a trip out here usually comes with a few standard questions.

Here is what you need to know if you are thinking about joining us on board:

How do you get there?

The Ribbons are remote. Steaming directly from Cairns takes about 8 to 18 hours. To maximise your time on the reef and avoid a long steam back, we often recommend a fly-in or fly-out option via the airstrip on Lizard Island.

Will it be crowded?

Hardly ever. Because of the distance from the coast, day-trip boats cannot reach this area. When we anchor up at iconic spots like the coral pinnacle of Steve’s Bommie or the giant potato cod colony at Cod Hole, we are usually the only vessel in sight.

When is the best time to visit?

It is spectacular year-round for diving, snorkelling, and fishing, but the winter months are truly unique. June and July bring the annual dwarf minke whale migration. This is one of the only places on earth where these curious whales will actively choose to approach and swim alongside you. Whether you want to spend your days diving untouched walls, flats fishing from our tenders, or just relaxing in a calm, quiet anchorage, we can tailor the itinerary completely to your group.

Happy World Environment Day! 🐋 🌴

This is genuinely a rare sequence. We have a green turtle, feeding on a jellyfish, surrounded by scavenger fish opportunistically hanging about for jelly leftovers.
Remarkably, we also have two dwarf minke whales passing through in the background.
There aren't many clips available where you can clearly hear the “pew-pew” Star Wars sound (it's actually called that! ), which is one of the most unusual cetacean vocalisations known!

It's minke whale season! 🥂
