🦖🌊 Happy Global Dinosaur Day! 🌊🦖
Today we’re celebrating the ancient ocean creatures that have outlived the dinosaurs and continue to swim among us!

🐟 Coelacanth – Thought extinct until 1938, this “living fossil” dates back 360 million years and can live over 60 years!
🐍 Lamprey – Parasitic and ancient, this jawless fish has survived 360 million years and could hold clues to healing spinal injuries.
🦀 Horseshoe Crab – Not a crab at all, but are related to scorpions, spiders and ticks! These hardy survivors date back 450 million years and have 10 eyes!
🐚 Nautilus – Once rulers of the ancient seas 500 million years ago, these spiraled mollusks are living relics of Earth’s early oceans.
🌊 Sea Jellies – Ghostly and graceful, jellyfish have drifted through our oceans for at least 500 million years—maybe even longer.
🐋 Pygmy Right Whale – Rare and mysterious, this elusive whale species emerged 17–25 million years ago.
🦈 Frilled Shark – With its eel-like body and 80-million-year legacy, this deep-sea dweller is truly prehistoric.

These incredible creatures remind us that the ocean is a living time capsule. Let's protect these ancient survivors for future generations to admire. 💙

🌊 Happy World Dugong Day!

Today, we celebrate the gentle dugong (Dugong Dugong), a cousin of the manatee, affectionately known as the sea cow. These marine mammals can grow up to 3m and weigh 360+kg. These peaceful grazers feed on seagrass in shallow coastal waters and are an important part of our marine ecosystem.

Despite being protected in many regions, dugongs are vulnerable to extinction due to their long lifespan, slow reproduction, and threats to their seagrass habitats. These beautiful creatures deserve to be protected, and the seagrass meadows they rely on. 💙

🔬🪸 There’s a lot of gear involved when the Reef Recovery, Adaptation and Restoration Team from the Australian Institute of Marine Science heads to sea!

This wraps up a 15-day charter assessing reef health across sections of the Great Barrier Reef - including capturing imagery used to create impressive 3D reef models.

From stacks of carefully organised tubs covering the back deck, to rows of gear offloaded and lined up on the wharf… and suddenly Miss Rankin’s big back deck feels very empty and quiet again. ⛴️

Today we honour and protect our precious turtles and tortoises around the world.

On our charters, we’re lucky to spot turtles on nearly every trip – and on diving expeditions between Cairns and the Torres Strait, we’ve witnessed the magical moments of mother turtles laying eggs and hatchlings making their first dash to the sea.

It’s a very special event to see and not one that many people get to witness.

From coral reefs and seagrass meadows to tiny nudibranchs and migrating whales, our oceans are filled with extraordinary biodiversity — all connected in ways we are still discovering.

Spending so much time at sea reminds us just how important it is to protect these ecosystems, not only for the incredible species that call them home, but for future generations too.
Every survey, every data point, every conservation effort matters. 🌊💙

This is a fraction of the creatures I've been lucky enough to photograph under the sea. 💙
