Locked ECU. Most shops would've handed it back. Ours went and found a way to unlock it anyway.

In 1988, Holden built 500 numbered Commodores that had no business looking the way they did — deep front spoiler, side skirts, flared guards, a wing you could land a plane on. Enthusiasts called it the "Plastic Pig." Some called it the "Batmobile."

Underneath the panels: a 5.0L V8 bored to 5.32L, 274hp at 5,200rpm, Brembo four-pot calipers, adjustable Konis, and a close-ratio five-speed — built by Tom Walkinshaw's TWR to satisfy Group A homologation rules, not to look good in a showroom.

It worked. The Commodore SS Group A SV took outright victory at Oran Park in '88 and gave BMW M3s and Nissan Skylines all they could handle at Bathurst. Six seconds to 60, in a car with walnut trim and suede Recaros.

Original price: roughly $47,000 — double a standard Commodore. Concourse examples now clear $200,000+ at auction.

Intakes and exhausts are usually the first mods anyone buys — cheap, easy to fit, and they make a real difference to sound. On their own though, they're not doing much for power.

A cold air intake cuts restriction and heat soak on the way in. A cat-back or turbo-back exhaust cuts backpressure on the way out. Together they free up airflow through the engine — but the factory ECU has no idea any of that's changed. It's still running a fuel and timing map built around the old restriction.

That's where the actual gains come from: recalibrating the tune to use the extra airflow properly. Skip that step and you've bought a better sound system, not a faster car.

We spec intake and exhaust combinations to suit the engine and the goal, then dyno-tune around them — so the mods and the calibration are working together, not just sitting next to each other.

People don't just bring us cars to tune. They bring us cars they've spent years building, saving for, and trusting nobody else to touch.

This week it was an HSV Camaro in for a full service — oil, filter, the works. Same care and attention as a supercharger install or a custom tune, because that's the deal: whatever's sitting in our bay gets treated like it's worth what it's worth.

The dyno runs and big power numbers get the attention. The trust gets built in the smaller jobs too.

In 2008, Holden built a family wagon with a 6.2L LS3 straight out of a Corvette. HSV called it the Clubsport R8 Tourer.

425hp. 406 lb-ft. A Tremec six-speed manual, standard — not an option. 0-60 in 4.7 seconds. New price: roughly $45,820.

Compare that to a Mercedes-AMG E63 wagon from the same era — 507hp, 4.0 seconds to 60, but nearly double the price at $88,775, and no manual gearbox on offer at all.

Holden built its last car in 2020. Cars like the R8 Tourer are exactly why plenty of us still aren't over it.
