Disc brakes and drum brakes are the two primary types of braking systems used in automobiles. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages.

Disc Brakes
- How they work: Disc brakes use a caliper to squeeze brake pads against a rotating metal disc (rotor).
- Advantages: Better heat dissipation, superior stopping power, less prone to fade under heavy braking, more consistent braking performance.
- Commonly found: On front wheels of most vehicles and all four wheels of performance cars.

Drum Brakes
- How they work: Drum brakes use brake shoes that expand outward against the inside of a metal drum when the brake pedal is pressed.
- Advantages: Less expensive to manufacture and repair, generally more durable, often used as parking brakes.
- Commonly found: On rear wheels of many vehicles, especially older or lower-cost models.
