How to Obtain a Driver’s License in Zambia.

The process of acquiring a driver’s license in Zambia is one that is very important, as road safety standards cannot be compromised. It is a requirement that everyone who drives a motor vehicle must be in possession of a valid driving license. It cannot be disputed that unlicensed driving is one of the leading cause of road traffic crashes in Zambia and this cannot be left unchecked but we must continue to educate everyone aspiring to be a driver to gain the necessary driving skills and knowledge.

The only institution that is mandated by law to issue driving licenses is the Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA). Apart from issuing licenses the agency also has other related functions such as regulation of traffic, road transport management through regulation, registration of motor vehicles and commercial vehicle operators, licensing and registering of driving schools and driving instructors.

The agency requires that one has to be eighteen years old and above, in order to apply for a driver’s license. Members of the public must first enroll at an approved and licensed driving school. These schools are dotted around the country and with the minimum time period of 7 days one can be taught how to drive and be eligible to take the theory exams that are set by the agency.

The module involves the theory lessons in the Zambian highway code, reversing in a T junction set up and road drive lessons.

If you're there and you think driving is difficult, come and you will find it so interesting and nice.

WHAT DOES L, 2, D3 MEAN ON THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMITION?

Aside from the obvious ones like the P (Park), R (Reverse), N (Neutral), and D (Drive), there are other things written on the indicator of your AT lever. These are drive modes you use on specific road situations. But what does L, 2, and D3 mean and when can I use them?

L (or Low)
Your guess is right – L stands for low. When in this mode, the engine will stay in its lowest possible gear ratio, which is basically the 1st gear. Some older automatics lock it in 1st gear but for the modern ones, it will shift up to the next gear at a certain range of revolutions per minute (RPM) to damage and to lessen the stress on your vehicle’s engine and transmission.

Where to use?
You can use this gear in downhill or uphill climbs that need steady and low speed – like driving on a heavy, moving traffic on a quite steep hill. For example, if you’re going uphill on an unfamiliar winding road. You can prevent to engage L so that you’ll have enough climbing power.

Just like the L mode, the 2 mode means that the engine will only use the first 2 gears of your car. It will maximize the RPM of each gear to get the needed pull from the engine. However, in other models, it will start and lock in 2nd gear and will just move up when a certain range of RPM is reached to mitigate engine damage.
Where to use?
Since the range of RPM is maximized, the 2 driving mode is essential when driving a fairly steep uphill so you can utilize your car’s torque. You can also switch to this mode when going downhill to engage engine braking – taking out the stress from your brakes.
Take note, though, that this can affect your car’s fuel more efficiency since it will be using more gas in higher RPMs. But keep in mind that your safety should be your number one priority.

D3 (or 3)
As the name suggests, the D3 (or sometimes just 3) mode will only utilize the first 3 gear ratios of your car, or in some, locks it on the 3rd gear only. D3 (or 3)

WHAT ARE DANGEROUS GOODS?

These are substances and cargo, which based on their nature, properties, or condition may cause a hazard in particular to public safety, environment or loss of infrastructure and equipment.

CLASSIFICATION OF DANGEROUS GOODS.

Dangerous goods are classified according to their characteristics and they are identified according to the international identification number (UN). The following are the UN numbers and their corresponding type of good. Take note the order starts with the most dangerous ones.

UN TYPE OF GOODS

1. Explosives. (Bomb)

2. Gases (ammonia)

3. Flammable liquids (petrol)

4. Flammable solid (metallic sodium, matches )

5. Oxidizing substances (peroxides)

6. Toxic Substances (phosphorus)

7. Radioactive materials (potassium)

8. Corrosive substances (acids)

9. miscellaneous. (Live animals, abnormal machine, combustion engines, vehicles etc..)

Therefore, as you're driving or following a vehicle carrying dangerous goods, check for the UN number to know the type of dangerous goods the vehicle is carrying and think of any measures to take in case of an accident.

RULE NUMBER 6

CHANGE THE SPEED ACCORDING TO THE ROAD AND TRAFFIC CONDITION AND NEVER EXCEED THE SPEED LIMIT.

Defensive driving calls for the acknowledgment of road signs and rules along with the basic use of common sense. Being aware of what these signs mean and knowing what to do or what not to do is very essential in times like these where the number of cars on our roads are increasing daily.

Road signs and rules are put into place to protect all road users, whether you are a driver or you’re a pedestrian, road signs and rules apply to us all. We always promote the healthy/active use of these said signs and rules.

1) _Road_- there are different roads such as gravel, wide tarred, and dual carriageways all these road have regulations especially concerning signs. And as a driver you ought to obey.

2) _Traffic conditions_- simply means the rate at which vehicles are moving and in like manner we all need to obey the rules of being in the motorcade or congestion.

3) _Speed Limits_-
speed Limits
It is gravely important that you comply with the speed limits. Ever so often, we may find ourselves running late, and as a result we may go over the speed limit, however we caution you to be mindful when doing this and try to avoid it. We should also note that if you’re caught over the speed limit, you can be either fined or imprisoned. Our highest speed limit here in Zambia is 100 kph on most roads especially highways. Some areas where schools are located close by and country roads usually have the speed limit set to under 80 kph.

Be safe, smart and save lives.
