A piston ring is a split metal ring attached to the outer diameter of a piston in internal combustion engines or compressors. It forms a seal between the piston and the cylinder wall, ensuring efficient engine operation by maintaining compression, controlling oil consumption, and managing heat transfer.

Piston rings are typically made of cast iron or steel for durability under high-pressure and high-temperature conditions.

📌1. Compression Piston Ring:

The compression piston ring is the topmost ring on the piston. Its primary role is preventing combustion gases from escaping into the crankcase during the power stroke. This ensures maximum power output and engine efficiency.

📌Purpose:
1. Seals the combustion chamber to maintain pressure.
2. Transfers heat from the piston to the cylinder wall.
3. Minimizes blow-by gases, reducing energy loss.

📌2. Second Compression Piston Ring:

The second compression piston ring is located below the top compression ring. It serves as a backup seal to enhance compression sealing and controls the oil film on the cylinder wall.

📌Purpose:
1. Provides additional sealing support to the top ring.
2. Reduces blow-by gases further.
3. Helps scrape excess oil back into the crankcase, working alongside the oil control ring.

📌3. Oil Control Piston Ring:

The oil control piston ring is the bottommost ring. It regulates the oil film on the cylinder wall, preventing excessive oil from entering the combustion chamber while ensuring adequate lubrication.

📌 Purpose:
1. Scrape excess oil from the cylinder wall.
2. Prevents oil from being burned in the combustion chamber.
3. Aids in maintaining proper lubrication and cooling for the cylinder and piston.
