The answer is B, and here's the maths.

Cheap oil saves you a few kwacha a litre. It also thins out faster, so you change it more often. It carries less protection, so the engine wears quicker. And when that engine finally goes, the rebuild costs more than every litre you ever put in it.

The litre costs more. The engine bills less. That's the whole argument, and it's the same one we've been making all month.

Thanks for playing along in August. Fleet, workshop, farm, mine or one vehicle, we supply the full genuine Caltex range in Zambia.

Last challenge of August, and it's the one that matters most.

Two vehicles. Same routes, same loads, same driver. One runs genuine Caltex. One runs the cheapest oil on the shelf.

Over 100,000 km, which one costs its owner more?

A — The genuine one
B — The cheap one
C — About the same

Comment A, B or C. Answer Monday, with the maths.

Workshop owners, the oil you put in is the oil they blame you for.

When a customer's engine gives trouble six months later, they don't remember the price of the service. They remember who did it.

Genuine Caltex, supplied direct, at workshop terms.

All month we've been talking to retailers and hardware stores about stocking Caltex. If you've been thinking about it, this is the message to send.

Reliable supply. Certified product. A brand that sells itself off the shelf.

Two things to tell us: where you are, and roughly what volume you move.

The answer is A

Dark oil is not a problem. It usually means the detergents are doing exactly their job: lifting soot and carrying it in suspension instead of letting it settle on your engine.

Grit is different. That's metal and dirt the oil can no longer hold. By the time you can feel it, it has already been circulating through the engine.

And C? That's a schedule, not a symptom. Follow it, but check the oil between changes.

You pull the dipstick. Which of these means the oil has to come out today?

A - It feels gritty between your fingers
B - It's gone dark
C - It's been 5,000 km

One of these is normal, one is a maintenance schedule, and one is your engine wearing out while you look at it.

The right stock shouldn't need a long explanation.

Caltex Havoline and Delo give your customers a recognised name, a broad range and the applications they need.

So you can spend less time explaining what's on the shelf and more time moving it..

The answer is C and anyone who said so knows engines.

Here's what those numbers actually mean:

The 15W or 20W is how easily the oil flows on a cold morning. Lower number, easier cold start.
The 40 or 50 is how well it holds its film once the engine is hot.

A tired high-mileage engine with wider clearances often does want the thicker 50. But the manufacturer built the engine and specified the grade start there, then adjust for age and how hard it works.

A minibus running daily Lusaka routes. Petrol engine, 180,000 km on the clock, no major work done.

Which grade?

A — 15W-40
B — 20W-50
