🚗 What Does the Letter on Your Tire Mean?

The letter at the end of your tire size (such as T, H, V, W, or Y) is called the speed rating. It indicates the maximum speed the tire is designed to safely handle under the correct load, proper inflation, and ideal driving conditions. For example, an R-rated tire is approved for speeds up to 170 km/h (106 mph), while a V-rated tire can safely handle up to 240 km/h (149 mph).

Keep in mind that the speed rating does not mean you should drive at those speeds. Instead, it shows the tire's ability to withstand heat, stress, and continuous operation at higher speeds. Using tires with a lower speed rating than your vehicle manufacturer recommends can reduce handling performance, braking stability, and overall safety.

You can find the speed rating as the final letter in the tire size, such as 205/55 R16 91V, where V is the speed rating. Always replace your tires with the same or a higher speed rating unless your vehicle manufacturer specifies otherwise.

When buying new tires, don't focus only on tread pattern or price. Check the load index, speed rating, and manufacturing date to ensure you're getting the correct tire for your vehicle. Choosing the right speed-rated tire helps improve safety, performance, and durability, giving you more confidence every time you drive.

There are currently protests and xenophobic attacks targeting black foreign nationals in South Africa right now. The situation is tense, temperatures are high and safety cannot be guaranteed.

If you’re planning to travel to South Africa especially KZN/Durban, please stay alert and stay informed. It’s better to keep your drivers out of the country between Sunday 28 June and Wednesday 1 July. Government is promising peace with no demonstrations, but safety is not guaranteed.

If you find yourself in South Africa already:
1. Avoid unnecessary movement and stay away from public places and shopping malls.
2. Stock up on basics — food and water — in Johannesburg before heading to Durban.
3. Once in Durban, park only at safe, secure truck stops with proper security.
