Marine batteries operate in a demanding environment.
Boats, outboard motors, inboard engines, jet skis, trolling motors and onboard electrical equipment all place different demands on a battery.
Vibration is a major consideration. Engine vibration, wave impact and constant movement put mechanical stress on the battery and its internal components. Marine batteries are designed to withstand higher levels of vibration than conventional automotive batteries.
Then there is moisture. In saltwater environments, salt and humidity accelerate corrosion around terminals, connections and other exposed components. Battery connections need to be kept clean, tight and protected.
The electrical demand also changes according to the application.
Starting an outboard or inboard engine requires a high current for a short period. A trolling motor can draw power continuously for hours. Fish finders, GPS and chartplotters, VHF radios, bilge pumps, lighting and other onboard equipment add further electrical loads.
That is why marine applications can require starting, deep-cycle or dual-purpose batteries, depending on what the battery is expected to power and how it is used.
There is another consideration with marine batteries: periods of inactivity. Boats and jet skis can sit for weeks or months between use, while the battery can slowly lose charge and connected equipment may continue to draw power.
If the vessel is going to be stored for an extended period, disconnect the battery where appropriate, or use a suitable battery maintainer if the battery is remaining connected. If the battery is removed from the vessel, store it correctly and keep it maintained.
