This is especially relevant with the influx of new automakers entering the local market, some of which lack extensive dealer networks or reliable after-sales support.

“While price and features are top-of-mind for buyers, the availability of parts is vital for the long-term viability of a vehicle,” says Juan Hanekom, National Director of the South African Motor Body Repairers’ Association (Sambra).

The strength of a brand’s supply chain directly affects repairers’ ability to restore vehicles to a safe and reliable condition,” Hanekom explains. Brands with robust supply chains support both their customers and the repair industry.

The Value of a Strong Supply Chain

Automakers with well-established, global supply chains are better equipped to handle disruptions and ensure consistent part availability. This resilience adds value for South African vehicle owners.

“Brands with diversified suppliers and strong logistical frameworks weather supply chain disruptions more effectively, helping repairers serve customers efficiently,” Hanekom adds.

Impact on Resale Value

Reliable parts availability doesn’t just affect immediate repairs; it also influences a vehicle’s resale value. Cars maintained with high-quality parts tend to fetch higher prices, while those with poor maintenance history may struggle to retain value.

Additionally, vehicles with strong aftermarket support are more appealing to buyers, as future repairs can be managed more easily and affordably.

“A vehicle’s price or performance isn’t the only factor that matters during its lifetime,” Hanekom concludes. “Reliable support through high-quality repairs and a dependable supply chain keeps vehicles safely on the road, adding significant value to ownership.”
