People often say "my brakes need replacing" without realising there are two different parts involved, and they do not wear out at the same rate.

Brake pads press against the disc to slow the wheel down. They are the softer of the two, designed to wear first, and are replaced more often.

Brake discs are the metal rotors the pads clamp onto. They wear more slowly, but worn or scored discs reduce braking performance even with new pads fitted.

Squealing, grinding, or a pulsing pedal are signs one or both need attention. We check pad thickness and disc condition as part of every full service.

When your temperature gauge climbs into the red, the instinct is often to push on and get home. That is usually the worst thing you can do.

An overheating engine can cause serious damage in a matter of minutes, and some of it cannot be reversed.

What overheating can lead to:

- A warped cylinder head, one of the most expensive repairs on any engine
- A blown head gasket, which often means the engine needs to come apart
- Damage to pistons and internal components if you keep driving
- In severe cases, complete engine failure

Overheating is one of those problems that is cheap to prevent and very expensive to ignore. Regular coolant checks catch it before it becomes serious.

Feel a jolt when you shift into drive, or stop at the robot? It might not be your engine.

Your engine does not just sit in the bay. It is held in place by mounts, and those mounts absorb the vibration and movement that comes with every start, stop and gear change.

When they wear out, that vibration has nowhere to go, and you feel it.

It is easy to blame the road, but worn mounts are often the real cause. Left too long, they can put extra strain on other components connected to the engine.

If something feels different, bring it in and we will take a proper look.

Did you know that under-inflated tyres make your engine work harder to move the car, and wear unevenly in the process?

Tyre pressure drops naturally over time, and temperature changes can affect it too. It is one of those things that is easy to forget about until something feels off.

What to know:

- Check your pressure once a month, when the tyres are cold
- Use the pressure listed on the sticker inside your door frame or in your manual, not the number on the tyre itself
- Do not forget the spare
- Most petrol stations have air available, and it takes two minutes

If one of them is yours, congratulations. Now here is what nobody explains at the dealership.

Your new car has a service schedule set by the manufacturer. You will find it in your service booklet or digital schedule. The first service is where it starts, and it usually covers:

- Oil and filter change
- Fluid levels checked and topped up
- Brakes, tyres and lights inspected
- The service recorded, so your car has a complete history from day one

Keep every service record. It protects your car's value and gives your mechanic a full picture of what has been done.
