In South Africa, having car insurance is only half the battle. The real test is whether your claim gets paid when you're standing on the side of the N1 at 2:00 PM in a thunderstorm.

With pothole damage on the rise and "crash-for-cash" scams becoming more sophisticated in 2026, here is how you can bulletproof your policy and save money.

1. The Pothole "Paper Trail" 🕳️
Hitting a pothole isn't just "bad luck"; in SA, it’s a claims minefield.
The Trap: Many standard comprehensive policies actually exclude tyre and rim damage unless it’s part of a larger accident.

The Tip: Specifically ask for a Tyre and Rim add-on.

The Trick: If you hit one, take a photo of the pothole and the nearest landmark immediately. You often need to prove the road authority was negligent. Pro tip: Use your phone's "Share Location" to pin the exact GPS coordinates for your insurer.

2. The "Honesty Discount" vs. The "Rejection Risk" 🏠
Security Disclosure: If you told your insurer you park in a locked garage but you’ve started parking on the pavement because your garage is full of old gym gear, your theft claim will be rejected.
