We recently had a vehicle come into the shop with a rough misfire, a glowing red exhaust, and a terrible rotten-egg smell. π€’
What actually causes this?
When an engine misfires, it pumps raw, unburnt gasoline straight out of the cylinder and down into the white-hot exhaust system. When that raw fuel hits the catalytic converter, it creates an uncontrolled chemical meltdown, spiking temperatures past 1,000Β°C! That rotten-egg smell? That's the internal ceramic lining literally cooking itself.
