railer Pre-Trip Inspection Checklist
A roadworthy truck still needs a safe, properly maintained trailer. A quick inspection before departure can prevent breakdowns, delivery delays, and serious accidents.
Before every trip, check:
Coupling and kingpin: Confirm that the fifth wheel is correctly locked, the release handle is secure and there are no visible cracks or excessive wear.
Air and electrical connections: Check that air lines and electrical cables are securely connected, free from leaks and not dragging or chafing.
Braking system: Test the service and parking brakes. Look for air leaks, damaged brake chambers, worn components, and ABS or EBS warning lights.
Tyres, wheels, and hubs: Inspect tyre pressure, tread, sidewalls, wheel nuts and rims. Check hubs for oil leaks or signs of overheating.
Suspension and chassis: Look for damaged air springs, broken leaf springs, loose U-bolts, worn bushes, structural cracks, or a trailer sitting unevenly.
Landing legs: Ensure the landing legs are fully raised and the handle is secured before moving the trailer.
Lights and reflectors: Test brake lights, indicators, hazards, taillights, and side markers. Make sure reflectors and reflective tape are visible.
Load security: Confirm that the load is correctly distributed and secured with suitable straps, chains, and anchor points. Doors, gates, and curtains must be properly closed.
Do not operate the trailer if you find:
A faulty coupling or kingpin
A significant air leak
Poor brake response
Loose wheel nuts
Seriously damaged tyres
Structural or suspension cracks
An insecure or overloaded load
