Everyone's talking electrification, but plenty of South Africans still want torque, towing ability and long-distance range.

GWM's answer is a new 3.0-litre turbodiesel for the P500 and Tank 500, producing 170 kW and 620 Nm through a nine-speed automatic. It is remarkably smooth and quiet, tows up to 3,500 kg and starts at R724,900.

iCAUR has completed its hat-trick with the new V25 that slots between the V23 and V27, and it brings something many South African buyers may find reassuring: a petrol range extender.

Revealed at Chery's International User Summit 2026 in Wuhu, China, the V25 pairs a 1.5-litre turbopetrol with electric drive for a claimed 355 kW and 505 Nm, plus an estimated 150 km of electric range. Local pricing is still to be announced.

Can a diesel still make sense in a stylish premium SUV? A week in the new Audi Q3 Sportback TDI S line suggests it can.

Its 2.0-litre turbodiesel produces 110 kW and 360 Nm, and despite a routine of short, stop-start school runs, the fuel gauge moved remarkably slowly. Audi claims 5.0 l/100 km. The third-generation Q3 also brings bolder styling and a completely new digital cabin.

Nine years in the making, and it arrived by air.

Tesla finally revealed its next-generation Roadster at a SpaceX test site in Texas, where a prototype broke every rule in the book by driving upside down on a looping ramp, only to fly over a line-up of Teslas on cold-gas thrusters and record a claimed zero to 60 mph (about 97 km/h) run in 0.81 seconds. Production is promised for 2028.

Whether a showpiece or genuine sports car, there's never been anything like it!

Diesel and double cabs have always gone hand in hand in South Africa – so what happens when you put a turbopetrol in a Ranger Wildtrak?

The 2.3-litre EcoBoost delivers 222 kW and 452 Nm through a 10-speed automatic, giving the Wildtrak a smoother, quieter and far more eager character. It comes at a cost, though, with Ford quoting around 9.3 l/100 km.

The most radical thing about the new BMW iX3 might not be its electric drivetrain – it's where BMW has put the information.

Panoramic iDrive is the brand's biggest interface change since the original iDrive of 2001. Its Panoramic Vision display stretches almost from A-pillar to A-pillar across the base of the windscreen, keeping essential driving information in the driver's natural line of sight rather than down in a binnacle or across on a central screen.

The iCaur 03T IWD is faster, more powerful and more sophisticated than the V23, but does that make it the better iCaur?

With 205 kW, 385 Nm, zero to 100 km/h in 6.5 seconds and 225 mm of ground clearance, the 03T is certainly capable. Yet its R699,900 price tag and touchscreen-heavy cabin left us still favouring the smaller V23.

Hyundai has given the Staria and Creta timely makeovers, with sharper styling, upgraded technology and some important changes to their local line-ups.

The Staria retains its 2.2-litre turbodiesel with 130 kW and 430 Nm, while the Creta gains the new N Line, with a 1.5-litre turbo producing 117.5 kW and 253 Nm.

Creta pricing now starts at R434,900, with the N Line flagship at R569,900.

Bentley has gone electric with the 653 kW Torcal, its first fully electric production model. Lexus is taking its luxury philosophy onto the water with the 68-foot LY 680 yacht. And Volkswagen is bringing one of its best-known names into the electric era with the new ID. Tiguan.

Three very different ideas, but all offering a glimpse of where the world's major automotive brands are heading.
