One of the problems with modern Land Rovers is their increasing reliance on ever-larger rim sizes. But there's good news, because well-known wheel manufacturer Compomotive have released a set of 18x8 rims for modern Land Rovers. All thanks to Gordon of Green Oval Experience for these being available. Here's his story:
"I first looked at the possibilities of fitting 18” rims to the new LR products in September 2009, after hearing that the new D4 3.0 ltr would not offer anything smaller than 19” rims due to the new enlarged brake calliper design. I wanted to upgrade my D3 to a new RRS or D4 in a few months and was concerned with having only one AT available in a 19” size, and the difficulty and cost in getting them. I approached several other companies about an 18” rim to suit, both in Australia and overseas, but none had any 'stock' item that would do the job. Frustrated, I then decided to look at having a rim made specifically for this vehicle. As a 'proof of concept', I had an existing 18” rim modified and an inner component made to my design that showed it was possible to clear the callipers with an 18” design. I knew Compomotive made an 18” rim for the Bowler Nemesis rally car (which was based on the RRS 4.2 ltr Supercharged), and so approached them with the idea of modifying it to fit the D4 3.0 ltr. They agreed to send me out a rim, which I marked up with the required modifications. They then sent me out a prototype, which fitted perfectly! They then handed the design to their engineers, who turned it into the final product." The specs are:
• - 18x8 (18 inch diameter, 8 inches wide)
o This wheel was tested to TUV standard at a load rating of 950 kg - load spec as for the OEM rims is 940kg. The factory standard is +53, so there's a track increase of 18mm. o 5 x 120mm PCD, 72.5mm centre bore diameter
o The nuts are standard LR nuts as per the 17, 18, and 19" LR rims. They engage the thread for at least 9 turns, same as the OEM rims. However, the standard LR security nut does not fit and there are no known alternates.
• The rims fit:
o All Discovery 3 and Discovery 4 models (petrol and diesel). o Range Rover Sport 2.7 and 3.0 ltr TDV6, TDV8 and V8 (without Brembos)
o All Freelander 2 models
There's not a lot of clearance between the calliper and rim when fitted, but the rims certainly have been proven to work in the field and come from a well-respected name in aftermarket industry who have supplied the likes of Bowler, makers of the famed Wildcat.
