Nobody packs for a breakdown. Until it happens. A good emergency kit isn’t about being dramatic. It’s about staying visible and in control while you wait for help. And honestly, most roadside situations go wrong because people are unprepared and scrambling.

A good emergency kit is about two things: being visible, and staying calm while you wait for help.

This post is for the stuff that can turn a normal drive into a stressful one fast. Not the “nice to have” things. The safety basics.

If anything below has been on your mind lately, don’t ignore it just because the car is still moving. Holiday traffic and long distances have a way of exposing weak points.

𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀.
Brakes don’t always fail dramatically. They usually give hints. Pay attention if you’ve noticed:
✅ squealing or grinding
✅ the pedal feels softer than normal, or you need more pressure to stop
✅ vibration when braking
✅ pulling to one side
✅ a burning smell after normal driving

If your brakes are grinding, the pedal feels spongy, or the car pulls when you brake, don’t push your luck. Get it checked before you go.

If you’re travelling in the school holidays, here’s the best favour you can do for yourself now. Get ahead of the boring stuff.

A lot of holiday drama starts with something small that was giving quiet warnings for weeks. A tyre that’s been losing pressure. A battery that’s tired. Brakes that don’t feel quite right. Then you add traffic, heat, a full load, and long distances and it turns into a breakdown at the worst possible time.

So let’s keep it simple. This is your pre trip check list. Some of it you can do at home in ten minutes. The rest is where a proper inspection really earns its keep.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗴𝗼:

✅ 𝗧𝘆𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲
𝗔𝘁 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲: Check pressure when tyres are cold (before you’ve driven far). Look for uneven wear, cracks, or bumps. Check the spare is inflated. Make sure you have the jack, wheel spanner, and locking wheel nut key.
𝗡𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝗮 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹: The steering feels shaky, the car pulls to one side, tyres are wearing unevenly, or you’ve had a pothole hit. That’s alignment, balancing, and a suspension check territory.

✅ 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀
𝗔𝘁 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲: Listen and feel. Any squealing, grinding, vibration, soft pedal, or pulling is a warning.
𝗡𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝗮 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹: Brakes are not a DIY guess. If you’ve noticed any of the signs above, get them checked before you leave.

✅ 𝗙𝗹𝘂𝗶𝗱𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗸𝘀
𝗔𝘁 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲: Look for fresh puddles where you park. Check engine oil on level ground. Check coolant only when the engine is cold and never open the coolant cap when it’s hot. Top up washer fluid.
𝗡𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝗮 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹: If you’re topping up often, if you see oily patches, notice a coolant smell, or the temperature gauge has been creeping higher than usual.

✅ 𝗕𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘆
𝗔𝘁 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲: Notice slow cranking, dim lights, or random electrical glitches.
𝗡𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝗮 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹: A proper battery and charging test. It’s quick, and it’s far better than being stranded at the first stop.

✅ 𝗟𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀
𝗔𝘁 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲: Do a full walk around. Headlights, brake lights, indicators, hazards, reverse lights. Ask someone to help or use your phone camera.
𝗡𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝗮 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹: If lights are dim, flickering, or you have warning lights on the dash. That’s usually an electrical issue worth diagnosing properly.

✅ 𝗪𝗶𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆
𝗔𝘁 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲: If wipers smear or skip, give them a quick clean first. If they still smear, replace them. Clean your windscreen properly inside and out, and top up washer fluid.
𝗡𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝗮 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹: If your demister isn’t working properly or your aircon is struggling to clear the windscreen. That’s a safety issue, not just comfort.

✅ 𝗕𝗲𝗹𝘁𝘀, 𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲𝘀, 𝘄𝗲𝗶𝗿𝗱 𝘀𝗺𝗲𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗻𝗼𝗶𝘀𝗲𝘀
At home: Pay attention. New squeaks, burning smells, a sweet coolant smell, or anything that sounds “not like your car” is worth acting on.
Needs a professional: Anything you can’t confidently explain. A short check now beats a long wait later.

Connected cars, data and your choices. Let’s start simple. Cars aren’t just mechanical anymore. Many of them are connected.

If your vehicle sends you a service reminder through an app, alerts you to a fault, or allows you to book a service from your phone, that’s telematics.

Here’s what that means.

Your car collects performance data. That data can be transmitted remotely. Sometimes you get a helpful reminder. Sometimes you get a booking link.

And that’s where it becomes interesting.

If your car suggests a specific workshop before you’ve even thought about where to go, that influences your decision. Not because you’ve lost your rights. But because the suggestion arrived first.

Right now, telematics-enabled vehicles are still a smaller part of the South African market. But that will change over time.

So it’s worth understanding how connected systems work.

Overheating isn’t only a “mid-summer, middle-of-nowhere” problem. It can happen in traffic, on a school run, or while you’re idling with the aircon on. If your temperature needle climbs, your goal isn’t to “push through”. Your goal is to stop safely and avoid damage.

A few cooling system myths that cause trouble

Myth: Coolant is optional.
Coolant isn’t just coloured water. It helps with heat control and protects the system from corrosion. If you’re topping up often, something’s not right.

Myth: No puddle means no leak.
Small leaks can burn off on a hot engine. You might only notice the level dropping over time.

Myth: Overheating only happens on long trips.
Traffic and slow driving can be worse because there’s less airflow through the radiator.

Signs to take seriously
🌡️ The temperature needle creeping higher than normal
🌡️ A sweet smell (often coolant)
🌡️ Steam from the front of the car
🌡️ Coolant level dropping between checks

If the temperature climbs while you’re driving:

⚠️ Pull over somewhere safe as soon as you can and switch the engine off. Let it cool properly. 🚨 And don’t open the coolant cap while it’s hot. The system is pressurised and it can spray boiling coolant.

⚠️ If you’re stuck and it’s an emergency, water can help you get off the road, but it’s not the long-term answer. If you can, keep a bottle of the correct premixed coolant in the car and have the system checked if the level keeps dropping.

🤔 Quick question: when last did you check your coolant level? Be honest.

Before your next drive, take 60 seconds to check your coolant level (when the engine is cold). If it’s dropping, don’t ignore it. That’s your early warning.
