1963 Aston Martin Lagonda Rapide

Carrozzeria Touring of Milan styled the Lagonda Rapide using its patented Superleggera (super-light) tubular construction method, resulting in elegant, Italian-influenced bodywork.

Built on a lengthened Aston Martin DB4 chassis, the four-door saloon was produced from 1961 through January 1964, with only 55 examples completed during the entire production run.

David Brown had acquired both Aston Martin and Lagonda in 1947, positioning Aston Martin as performance-oriented while Lagonda emphasized luxury with sporting capability. The Rapide represented this approach, combining sophisticated mechanicals with refined coachwork for buyers who wanted both performance and comfort in a proper four-door package.

Power came from a 3,995cc twin-cam straight-six engine (the same unit later used in the DB5) paired with a Borg-Warner three-speed automatic transmission. Dual-circuit, servo-assisted four-wheel disc brakes provided confident stopping power, while a de Dion rear axle delivered improved ride quality and handling balance.

The Lagonda Rapide remains one of the most exclusive and sophisticated four-door grand tourers of its era.
