The Cleat Hitch Is Easy… But Most People Tie It Wrong! 🪢
If you own a boat, you’ve probably used a Cleat Hitch countless times.
It’s the go-to knot for securing dock lines, halyards, tow lines, and other ropes to a cleat.
It’s easy to tie, holds securely under tension, and can be released quickly when needed.
But there’s a catch…
It’s also surprisingly easy to tie incorrectly. 👀
✅ Pros
• Easy to tie
• Secure under tension
• Easy to release, even under load
• Gentle on the rope
❌ Cons
• Easy to mis-tie under pressure
• May not hold properly on an unsuitable cleat
⚓ Common Uses
• Securing boats at docks and marinas
• Tying dock lines and painter lines
• Securing halyards and jib sheets
• Attaching ropes to posts when a cleat is available
💡 Tip: Look for the characteristic X pattern over the cleat and make sure the final locking hitch is tied correctly.
There are also OXO and Multi-Wrap variations for different situations, such as changing loads or thin, slippery lines.
