The Toyota Dyna became a familiar sight on South African roads as a refrigerated “cooler truck”, delivering meat, dairy, frozen foods and fresh produce. Its compact dimensions, durable diesel engines and truck-based chassis made it ideal for urban distribution, while insulated bodies and refrigeration units allowed temperature-sensitive loads to travel safely between suppliers, shops and depots.

The Toyota Hilux single cab became a South African workhorse from the 1970s onward, with the boxy generations of the 1980s and 1990s becoming especially familiar on farms, building sites and small businesses. Their separate ladder-frame chassis, rear-wheel drive and simple petrol and diesel engines prioritised durability and easy repair over comfort or aerodynamics. That straightforward engineering helped many of these Hiluxes survive decades of hard use.

The Ford Ranger 2.2 TDCi became a South African workhorse from 2011, paired mainly with Ford’s six-speed manual gearbox and later six-speed automatic options depending on the model and year. The 2.2-litre Duratorq’s broad torque band suited the closely spaced ratios, giving the Ranger good pulling ability without sacrificing highway economy. The manual’s sixth gear also helped keep engine speed down during long-distance driving, important for a bakkie doing serious kilometres.

The Audi Q5 arrived in South Africa in 2009, slotting between the smaller Q3 and larger Q7. Built on the same basic MLB architecture as the A4, it combined Audi’s car-based engineering with SUV practicality, and South African buyers could choose from petrol and turbo-diesel engines, with quattro available across the range. The Q5 quickly became a familiar sight on local roads and helped establish the premium midsize SUV as a major segment.

The Toyota Tazz became a South African motoring icon after launching locally in 1996 as the entry-level version of the fifth-generation Toyota Corolla hatchback. Built at Toyota’s Prospecton plant in Durban, it was deliberately simple, affordable and cheap to run, making it hugely popular with first-time buyers, students, fleets and driving schools. Production continued until 2006, giving the Tazz a remarkable 10-year run.

The piston engine became the standard powerplant for South African cars as mass motoring expanded through the 20th century. The engine block houses the cylinders, while pistons move up and down inside them, converting combustion pressure into mechanical motion through the connecting rods and crankshaft. South Africa’s locally produced engines ranged from simple cast-iron designs to modern aluminium blocks with turbocharging and electronic fuel injection.

The Mazda BT-50 arrived in South Africa in 2006, replacing the Mazda B-Series and sharing its platform with the contemporary Ford Ranger. The partnership went deeper than styling: the two bakkies shared major chassis, suspension and drivetrain engineering, although engines and specifications varied by generation. The BT-50 became known for combining Mazda’s passenger-car styling with proper bakkie capability.

Isuzu light trucks have been part of South Africa’s commercial-vehicle landscape since the 1970s, originally through the locally assembled Isuzu N-Series and later the N-Series and F-Series ranges. Their combination of compact dimensions, diesel engines and a proper truck chassis made them popular with delivery companies, municipalities, farmers and small businesses. Isuzu’s local production and extensive dealer network also helped make these trucks easy to keep working.

The Mahindra XUV500 arrived in South Africa in 2012, bringing Indian-built SUV engineering into a market dominated by Japanese and Korean brands. It used a monocoque chassis and front-wheel drive, with an available all-wheel-drive system, and was powered locally by Mahindra’s 2.2-litre turbo-diesel. Its seven-seat layout, high ground clearance and relatively generous equipment made it an unusual alternative to established family SUVs.
