Great Tips to Increase Engine Life

The engine in your vehicle has a very important job, to produce the power that takes you to all the places that you want to go. Why would you not want to do everything in your own power to ensure that your engine has a long and healthy life. Not only is it a great investment to take proper care of your engine, but it ensures that you are less likely to break down or have other issues that result in you being stranded. By utilizing these simple tips to increase engine life you are doing yourself and your vehicle a favor!

Minimize short trips
A short trip to the mini market is much more hazardous for your vehicle than a long road trip. This is because the constant cooling and heating up of your engine does more damage than constantly running your engine at its normal operating temperature. Be sure to combine multiple short trips whenever possible.

Use synthetic oil
The use of synthetic motor oil not only helps increase your vehicle's performance but it does a better job of protecting the moving components of the vehicle's motor.

Keep the gas tank full
As the gas tank empties debris and other contaminants tend to settle at the bottom of the tank. This means they are more likely to be pumped into the engine as the last remaining gas is used. To protect your motor from these contaminants be sure to try and keep your tank above a quarter full, or more.

Install a fresh fuel filter
A fresh fuel filter will always be a smart investment. Check your vehicle's owner's manual to see how often this part should be changed. The fuel filter will ensure that polluted gasoline does not make it to the engine.

Keep up with oil changes
Of course one of the most important things you can do to lengthen the life of your engine is keep up with oil changes. This ensures proper lubrication and prevents harsh metal on metal contact inside the motor.

Change the air filter
If your air filter becomes clogged the motor will compensate for the loss of oxygen in the air/fuel mixture that is necessary to run the engine by burning additional gasoline. This can increase the engine operating temperature and result in major engine problems.

If you do not keep up with scheduled maintenance or drive your car regularly under harsh conditions you will likely find yourself in need of major engine repair or more likely engine replacement.
