Today we will be discussing the importance of spark plugs, what they do, when do you need to change them and how to select new spark plugs. A spark plug may seem like a small part but plays an incredibly important role in the running of your vehicles engine.
So let’s start with what is internal combustion? That is when your vehicle has to turn the fuel in your car from potential energy into a source of kinetic energy therefore the engine needs to release it and does so through the process of combustion. In your car’s engine cycle, the valves fill the cylinder with an air and fuel mixture, which are highly explosive when combined. The piston in the engine moves upwards it compresses the mixture until it’s in a very small space, this creates even more potential energy. When compression reaches its peak the engine ignites this mixture with a small spark, which creates an explosion that forces the piston back down, turning the crankshaft in the engine which makes your vehicle move.
Spark plugs are what supply the spark that ignites the air and fuel mixture; they are responsible for the explosion that makes your vehicles engine produce power. Spark plugs create an arc of electricity across two leads which are not touching, but close enough that electricity can jump the gap between them. Spark plugs along with electrical and timing equipment which powers them, are part of the ignition system.
Spark plugs are made from very durable material, but over time due to corrosion and withstanding millions and millions of explosions they do need to be replaced; as they lead to smaller and weaker sparks, which lead to reduced efficiency in the engine, these could lead to other issues like misfiring, or failure to fire.
