There are some car fluids that need your attention during Winter season, but not all fluids that need to be changed in a car are as essential as the one that services your engine.

As temperatures drop, engine oil, also known as motor oil, may become thicker or more viscous. Excessively viscous oil can make your oil pump work harder to lubricate necessary components as well as take longer to lubricate a very cold engine upon start-up.

A fan belt is one of the more essential car parts that need regular maintenance, but how would you know when to change it?

Here are some signs to indicate that itโ€™s time for a replacement:

A simple fan belt inspection will tell you if your fan belt needs replaced, but if you donโ€™t know how to check for cracks, rather listen to hear if perhaps the fan belt squeaks when you start your engine.

Alternatively, if you notice that your lights dim when you start the car, or when steering becomes difficult, the fan belt may need to be replaced.

When the water pump is not working due to the fan belt wearing down, your engine will get overheated and it is therefore really important to have it replaced before it snaps and you find yourself stranded on the side of the road calling for a tow.

Prepare for wintry weather and top up with antifreeze!

But what is antifreeze and what does it do?

Antifreeze, or coolant, is added to a vehicleโ€™s cooling system, which circulates the fluid throughout the engine and radiator to prevent overheating. Without regular coolant service, the cooling system may not function as it should, causing the engine to become too hot and cause damage such as warped heads, blown head gaskets, or even engine failure.

In the same way that coolant keeps the engine from overheating it also keeps it from freezing up when left to sit in the cold. Frozen fluid may prevent your car from starting on cold winter mornings.
