It was 1995 in a small coastal town formerly known as Stanger located in the Natal province of South Africa. I was 6 years old and went to a well known workshop called Kistas mobil with my dad and there it was... The BMW E36 M3 Coupe in Dakar yellow.
It's sleak coupe design, pillar less doors, windows that went down slightly when opening the doors, the unmistakable smell of the leather interior, the beautiful narrow and wide M3 wheels, the dual tail pipe with 1 slightly shorter than the other, distinct feeling when pulling on the door handle, BMW M POWER in bold on the tappet cover, Continental tyres and that tilted sunroof etched automotive nostalgia into my young mind.
29 years later and this Car still captivates me with its German charm, beautiful on the outside and powerful when you press that pedal to the floor. It's naturally aspirated vanos engineered S50 engine made it the standard to which every other car was measured to. This is truly, unapologetically without a shadow of a doubt, the ultimate driving machine!!! If you know you know. Today it's 210kw engine may seem slow or outdated but try keep up with one on the highway and you will soon see why it's an M3😎
