The Carisma was a 4-door sedan built by NedCar BV, a joint venture between Mitsubishi Motors, Volvo and the Netherlands' government. Sold in Holland, Germany, Belgium, the UK, Austria and other European markets, a right-hand drive version was imported into Japan and went on sale in October 1996. Developed to a "Genuine European comfort" theme, the Carisma used rational packaging to provide a level of comfort, with emphasis on leg and head room.

The Challenger all-round sporty RV was introduced in July 1996. In North America, the car was launched with the Montero Sport nameplate. While sharing the second-generation the Pajero's chassis, the Challenger was developed using an urban taste style lower body and was one of the few SUVs in its day not to have the spare tire mounted on the tailgate.
