Motorcycle Safety Institute - Africa

Motorcycle Safety Institute - Africa The Motorcycle Safety Institute of South Africa is a well-recognised organisation on Motorcycle Safety & Risk Awareness in South Africa.

The Motorcycle Safety Institute is the leading organisation on Motorcycle Safety & Risk Awareness in South Africa, offering specialised motorcycle rider training and educational programmes both on local soil and into Africa. MSI was founded by Hein Jonker in November 2015 as an independent and private non-government organisation, sparked by a passion for life on two wheels that started with Bike T

alk MRA in 2005. Today, MSI is operated by a dedicated team of highly skilled motorcycle instructors and motorcycle safety enthusiasts. The Motorcycle Safety Institute is also the only active organisation that monitored Motorcycle Crashes & Collisions in South Africa from Jan 2016 to Dec 2019; collected and analysed valuable data for Risk Awareness and Safety Education among motorcyclists. With an ever-increasing network, MSI can aid and support those who share our vision. We work closely with EMS heroes, Road Traffic Authorities, Road Safety Organisations like Arrive Alive, Motorcycle Councils, and Riding Schools and Academies.

The Road Is Extremely Unforgiving.
Motorcycling isn't inherently dangerous — but it leaves no room for disrespect, ignorance, or carelessness. Your attitude on the road is as important as your skill. Change the way you think, and you'll change the way you ride.

You Share the Road with Someone's Parent, Child, or Partner.
The rider filtering past your window is heading home to someone who's waiting. Extend the same patience on the road that you'd want shown to the people you love when they ride. Share the road. Share the responsibility.

Gear Is Not Optional.
A helmet, jacket, gloves, boots, and pants aren't just accessories — they're the only thing between you and the road surface in a crash. Dress for the fall, not just for the ride.

Louder Music. Smaller Mirrors. Bigger Blind Spots.
Distractions inside your vehicle reduce your awareness of what's happening outside it. A motorcycle you didn't see, didn't hear, or didn't check for is still there — until it isn't.

The Gap Stopped You. The Escape Route Saved You.
Always leave a vehicle length between you and the car ahead when stopped — on the left, away from oncoming traffic. Not just for a quick getaway, but because a rear-end collision in that space could be fatal.

Your Indicator Matters More Than You Think.
When you signal, riders can plan. When you don't, they're forced to guess — at speed, in traffic. Use your indicators every time, not just when it's convenient. It's the law, and it keeps riders alive.
