The ix35 runs an interference engine, so the valves and pistons move through overlapping space in the cylinder at different points in the cycle. Correct timing is what keeps them synchronised and stops them making contact.

If the chain stretches excessively or jumps after a tensioner or guide failure, cam timing is lost and the valves and pistons may collide, potentially causing serious engine damage.

That's why the complete timing chain assembly (chain, tensioner and guides) is assessed and replaced as one system where required, rather than fitting a new chain to worn components.

Quick one for the 79 owners: how far into a corrugated road before your shocks start feeling vague and floaty?

That fade is why this client's 79 Series came off standard Tough Dog Foam Cells and onto bigger RALPH shocks.

A shock's real job isn't holding the vehicle up; the springs do that. It's turning suspension movement into heat and shedding it. Once it can't shed heat fast enough, the oil thins, damping drops off, and the ride goes vague long before anything actually breaks.

𝗙𝗼𝗮𝗺 𝗖𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗿𝘂𝗻𝘀 𝗮 𝟰𝟭 𝗺𝗺 𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗲. 𝗥𝗔𝗟𝗣𝗛 𝗿𝘂𝗻𝘀 𝗮 𝟱𝟯𝗺𝗺 𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗲.
That's not 29% bigger; it's 67% more piston area, because bore scales as a square, not a straight line.

More piston area = more damping force at the same pressure, so a laden 79 settles instead of pattering across the tops of the corrugations.

A bigger body also carries more oil, and oil volume is thermal mass, more mass, and more time before fade sets in.
Foam cell construction helps here too: microcellular foam replaces a free nitrogen charge, so the oil struggles to aerate under sustained work.

On a 79 running long-range tanks, a canopy and recovery gear, that thermal headroom matters more than any single number on the box. Laden rigs rarely fail in the first hour of corrugation. They fail in the fourth.

🛠️ Dustcovers protect the shock absorber piston rod and seals from grit and road debris, helping prevent premature seal and shock wear.
🛠️ Bumpstops give progressive resistance at full compression, helping prevent harsh mechanical bottoming and protecting the suspension and shocks.
🛠️ Low power on an AMG V8 can be caused by the ECU entering a protection/limp-home strategy when it detects a boost-pressure, sensor or engine-management fault, reducing available torque until the fault is traced.

There's a reason the Land Cruiser 80 Series has such a loyal following. But when you actually work a truck like this, the drivetrain cops a hammering, and the transfer case is usually first in line to feel it.

𝗕𝗶𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗿𝘂𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗱:

The 80 Series runs full-time 4WD with a center diff, so power's always being shared from front to rear. Brilliant for grip, but it does mean there's always something under load in there.

That center diff lock is a lifesaver off-road, but let a transfer case go neglected, and you start getting driveline bind, odd whining noises, and gear wear that only ever heads in one direction.

Fluid is a big part of it. Old or low-transfer-case oil is one of the most common reasons these wear out early, and you can easily avoid it. On a hard-working truck, it's worth keeping an eye on.

And catch the warning signs early: whining, vibration, low range, and stubbornness when engaging, because a rebuild is a lot cheaper than a full replacement.

- Many Audis run a timing chain instead of a belt, but here's the thing: those chains still stretch over time. When they do, your engine timing goes slightly out, and you'll usually get fault codes well before anything dramatic happens.

- 𝗧𝗙𝗦𝗜 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗗𝗜 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 are genuinely fussy about oil. Sticking to the right VW/Audi spec (504 00 / 507 00) makes a real difference to how long the engine lasts.

- And that "𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗱𝘂𝗲" 𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁? Not random at all; your car actually works it out based on how you drive, oil temp, mileage, and the whole lot.

The D4D Hilux is a proper workhorse, but the standard clutch does have its limits, especially once you're towing, carrying a load, or running a bit more power than factory. Stepping up to an upgraded clutch makes a real difference to how the bakkie copes when you're asking a lot of it.

𝗕𝗶𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗶𝗹𝘂𝘅 𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗱:

An upgraded clutch usually runs a stronger pressure plate and tougher friction material, so it grips harder and won't slip under more torque, which matters a lot on a turbo-diesel that makes its power down low.

Clutch slip is a sneaky one. It tends to show up as the revs climb without the speed following, usually under load or going uphill. Catch it early and you save the flywheel from cooking itself.

And while you're in there, it's well worth checking the flywheel too. A glazed or worn surface can chew through even a brand-new clutch quicker than you'd think.
Towing, off-roading, and stop-start traffic all wear a clutch faster than typical highway cruising, so it pays to match the clutch to how you actually use the bakkie.

Get the setup right, and honestly, you feel the difference every single time you pull away with a load on.
